Hey everyone! It’s fall again which of course means hanging up that tired old Bob Marley poster in your room, getting swindled by the bookstore and sleeping through your 8 a.m. after two days of classes. But don’t fret, because it also means a whole new crop of Her Campus posts and even better, a whole new season of music ripe for the listening. So turn off that Beach House record you’ve had on repeat for the last three months (or any other band with the words waves, beach, summer, tan or swim) and embrace the sounds of fall. (Note: the same goes for any music that could be considered “chillwave” because you shouldn’t even be listening to that in the first place).
I’m only half kidding. Summer music is a great listen any time of the year but when you’re constantly reminded of warmer temperatures and an overall better quality of life in the dead of winter, you’re only making things worse for yourself. Even as I write this, I’m looking down at my exposed forearms and am shocked to see my tan already disappearing. Moment of silence.
Let’s not dwell on the past, though. Instead, if you look to the future (and I suppose, the very recent past) you will see that the world of music blazes on, churning out albums and tracks that you are guaranteed to love. Like a new album from Blink-182 (out September 27) or Drake (October 24) or the Lou Reed and Metallica collaboration (November 1), which Reed by the way recently called “Awe-inspiring. It’s maybe the best thing done by anyone, ever. It could create another planetary system. I’m not joking, and I’m not being egotistical.” So there’s that. Plus, St. Vincent, Lil’ Wayne and Stephen Malkmus have already released their new albums – all of which are worth a listen.
Many of you probably know about these releases, as well as countless others and are looking to see these artists perform live. Well, you are in luck. The Minneapolis/St. Paul area has many venues and shows to offer including Explosions in the Sky, Odd Future, James Blake, Battles, They Might Be Giants, The Radio Dept, M83, Wild Flag, and countless others. Check out http://first-avenue.com/calendar or simply peruse the website of the band of interest. Further, Carleton’s Cave venue as well as The Pause, Lair or Burrow are great places to see artists without the hassle of travel.
See? Fall won’t be so bad after all. Now I will leave you with a view tracks from some of the aforementioned groups I am currently enjoying. Here’s to starting off the semester right!
St Vincent “Cruel”
Battles “Ice Cream”
Lil’ Wayne “6 Foot 7 Foot”
