A Birds-Eye View of Madrid: 3,2,1…Take-Off!

As a proud BC Eagle, I’m both happy and sad to be departing for Madrid, Spain this fall.  I’m sad to be leaving my family and friends behind, and to be missing out on what I’m sure will be a wonderful semester at the best campus around.  But I’m so happy to experience a new school that affords me this amazing opportunity, filled with new learning experiences, great new people, and a broadened perspective on the world.

With that said, I’m prepared to be hit with a heavy dose of culture shock.  Living in a different country, taking classes in a foreign language that should be my native tongue but isn’t, and mingling with natives and foreigners alike—the thought of it alone sends me reeling.  But I’m more than ready to take it on.

I’ve traveled to Madrid before- once a few years back.  But a week-long trip with my dad and grandparents is a far cry from a full four months of being fully integrated into the city’s rich culture. I’ll be living in an all-female residence hall where the majority of the occupants will be international students like me.  I’ll admit, the thought of living with all girls initially put me off.  I love my fellow collegiettes™, but sometimes too much estrogen can be overwhelming.  I’ve warmed up to the idea, though, and am now looking forward to meeting some great new girls from around the world!  Not to mention the included weekly room cleanings, laundry service, and free meals—definitely not the Walsh Hall treatment!  The only downside?  I’ll be commuting to my school, Universidad Carlos III, via two bus transfers and a 10-minute walk (Hello, Newton all over again… times two!).

Besides the basic logistics, I’m not quite sure what to expect yet.  But I’m sure it will be nothing short of amazing.  In a country as beautiful, populated, and teeming with history as Spain, there is absolutely no doubt about it.

Whatever happens, I’ll be sure to keep all of you updated.  Whether it’s about the delicious food, cross-country traveling, nightlife, or anything else that I experience, I promise to always fill you in- an Eagle’s birds-eye view of Madrid.

Just the beginning…

And now let the packing commence… How, exactly, does someone pack their whole life away for four months?  I’m not quite sure, but I’m thinking I’ll be up all night trying to figure it out.  Until then, ¡adios and ole! mis fellow collegiettes™!
