Remember that magnificent moment you bit into your first Fantastic Frank? Or do you recall that surreal moment you caught your first glimpse of Coach Beamer passing by you on campus? Of course you do, because like every other Hokie, you have an incurable case of Beamer Fever.

Head Football Coach Frank Beamer is undeniably a Virginia Tech icon inside and outside of Lane Stadium. He has earned countless coaching awards and last Saturday’s game against ECU was his 200th win here at VT; despite all this he is still as down to earth as ever.

Although the season just kicked off, Coach Beamer still managed to find time to answer a few quick questions.

Her Campus Virginia Tech: Has VT football changed a lot since you were student/player?
Frank Beamer: I don’t think the toughness of Virginia Tech football has changed. I think we played tough football back then and I think we play tough football now. But certainly, conference affiliation, our access to bowl games, our access to TV and our facilities have changed dramatically.

HCVT: How do you spend your off-season time?
FB: My favorite time is at our house on Lake Oconee at Reynolds Plantation in Georgia. Then generally, I get a few golf trips in. I try to get to Pebble Beach each year and to Augusta each year. Those are always fun things to look forward to.

HCVT: Do you have a pre-game ritual?
FB: Not really. The way our program is we generally follow the same timetable each game, but as far as me personally, putting on one sock before another, nah, I don’t do that.

HCVT: Have you ever had an interesting encounter with students who have spotted you on campus?
FB: I really like walking around this campus. John Ballein (Associate AD for Football Operations) and I do it about three or four times a week during the season. We take different routes each time and speak to most of the students as we go around. After our tragedy here on April 16, we were walking around and as we were coming up in front of Williams Hall there was a girl sitting by herself crying. We stopped and went over to talk with her. I really felt like by her seeing a familiar face and seeing someone who was sharing the same emptiness that we were able to help her that day.

HCVT: What is your favorite thing about being a Hokie?
FB: My favorite thing is I’ve got a job that as you go through the week you see a lot of people on this campus with a lot of different interests. But on Saturday, when we all gather in Lane Stadium, we’ve all got a common purpose, we’re all going in the same direction, all Hokies – alumni, students, fans – we’ve all got the same goal … and I like being a part of that.

Special thanks to Frank Beamer & Dave Smith
