Another SMU student answers questions about her exciting summer internship with LunaTeal Jewelry:
Â
1. Tell Her Campus readers a little bit about your internship. For those who do not know, what is LunaTeal and what aspect of LunaTeal are you involved with?Â
LunaTeal Jewelry is a Dallas-based upscale design company combining elegant style and innovation to create the fine art of jewelry. The collection is individually hand-crafted by the owner herself, Leslie Chatman. As the PR/Marketing intern, I construct press kits and marketing plans, write press releases, handle all social media (Facebook, Twitter, and our blog: The Fine Art of Jewelry – be sure to check back to those frequently for lots of giveaway opportunities!), while also pitching new ideas to help Ms. Chatman market her business.
Â
2. How did you first get started with LunaTeal?
I first got started with LunaTeal by answering her ad for a PR/Marketing intern. If you’re someone who is really set on working in the fashion industry, whichever side you want to pursue, know that interning is key. I would suggest searching for internships constantly – the more internships you have, the more experience you will earn – something that is extremely important in such a fast-paced industry.
Â
3) Describe a typical workday outfit for you:
Since Ms. Chatman hand-constructs her beautiful pieces from her home, there is no actual “workplace” that I venture off to each day, so I usually work through phone and e-mail. However, it is always important to look your best when representing the company you intern for. For example, whenever I attend fashion-based events to further promote LunaTeal, I always make sure that I am stylish — but more importantly, professional. In a creative work environment, I would suggest basing your look off of a typical work outfit (pencil skirt, modest blouse, heels), and work it into your on-trend style. Instead of a basic black pencil skirt, wear one that has a bright hue with a top that only bares your arms with a not-too-loud pattern. Color-blocking would also be a smart option. Think: chic and sophisticated… and practical. If your internship requires you to run around town, heels might not be the best idea. Try classy sling-back kitten heels!

4. What has been your biggest challenge interning this summer?
One of the biggest challenges interning this summer is time management. While also taking summer classes, exams and projects would sometimes keep me from answering e-mails as quickly as I would have hoped for. Also, when a pitch hasn’t garnered the response from the press we’re accustomed to, my job can be a little frustrating. But what better way to work out frustrations than by going back to the drawing board and brainstorming new ideas? The continuous innovative thinking that my job requires of me is what keeps me going and what has brought excitement to my summer.
