A New York State of Mind

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Quinnipiac chapter.

Hey ladies! My name is Erica Siciliano and I’m a junior here at QU. I am a print journalism major with a minor in History.  I love to write about things that have happened in my life and make them relatable to all girls on campus.  I am a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and I love hanging out with my sisters and friends.  As a born and raised New Yorker I love to be loud and fabulous all while having a good time.  I love watching reality television, especially The Real Housewives of New Jersey, and CSI marathons.  My dreams would to one day work for a teen magazine influencing young teen girls in a positive manner through the art of fashion journalism.

A friend of mine once lost her purse and had to go Toads during the day to get it, when she got back the look of shock and disgust all over her face the only words she could mutter out were, “Oh my God, Toads in the daylight looks completely different and gross.  Thank God I’m either blacked out or it’s too dark to care.”  That pretty much wraps up Toads.

Just a quick shuttle ride away from school, Quinnipiac’s finest line up, in their shortest skirts and their highest heels, every Saturday to take whisk them away to a night of extreme partying and overcrowded clubs. It’s kind of like the postal service, it could be raining, sleeting, or the apoloycse, but people would still be lined up by the shuttles waiting to go.

Toads is like a Las Vegas. First, there’s the art of gambling.  Toad goers gamble every Saturday night while waiting in line to get in and it’s you against the bouncer. One can either just deal with being under 21 or go all-in and gamble with their fake ID; some win big while other walk away with the shame and scarlet letter, better known as the dreaded ‘X.’

Next there’s alcohol, tons of alcohol just like a Las Vegas night club. As an exclusive 18 and older club, Toads is the only option for people to get their rage on without having to stay on campus on a Saturday night, even if you hate it, like myself, you put on a happy face and just do it, with a help from our little friend known as alcohol.

Alcohol makes Toads completely bearable. If it wasn’t for the shots taken before even getting to the shuttle, Toads would be nothing but people pushing and shoving all night but alcohol fixes all those little annoyances and makes Toads seems like the perfect place to party every night.  The music doesn’t seem as annoying and loud, the shoving becomes less of an infringement on one’s personal space, but rather a means to getting by.

Next there’s the air.  Like a Vegas Casino, the recycled air leaves a high in one’s mind.  With the overbearing crowds, low lights, blasting music Toads the ideal place for you and your friends to go wild and crazy.  It’s like once inside Toads, all morals and guidelines of daily life go fall to the wayside and no one really cares what others think about them. Since it’s so packed people don’t really have the time to look and see what you’re doing their too busy trying navigate the crowd to find their friends, or another girl or boy to dance with.

After a night of partying and gambling there’s the dreaded hangover. While some head to Arnie B. to catch up on their school work and nurse a hangover in silence, some spend the day just like the epic movie, piecing together what really occurred the night before and what was nothing but a figment of their drunken imagination.  Rummaging through text messages, BBM’s and testimony given by friends, tears, shame and happiness spread throughout campus as some learn what they did and others rejoice as their will power to not send a drunken text.

Lastly, and most importantly there’s the motto.  Better known as “What happens in Toads, Stays in Toads.” What goes on at Toads you never seems to get back to campus.  Even if you did do something completely embarrassing it seems to stay between you and your groups of friends never leaving the circle.  The quite girl who sits in the corner of your class could be going wild and crazy in Toads, but it never seems to phase you once you’re back within the means of a classroom. Even the pictures plastered across your newsfeed and Facebook wall, seem to have the before and the after but lack the during.  Toads provides ever QU student just what they need,   a place to have fun and escape the picture perfect campus located right on Mt. Carmel and have a night to let loose and live a little.
