While a large amount of people share the common fear of heights, Elena Saulys, ISU Cheerleader and junior exercise science major, has never been terrified of being tossed up into the air in front of large crowds. Having to depend on three or more other cheerleaders to catch her fall, Saulys does it flawlessly. Having done it since a young age, Saulys tells us her story and the road she took to become an ISU Cheerleader.

HC: How long have you been cheerleading?
Elena: Since 8th grade.

HC: How do you balance school and cheerleading?
Elena: I’ve been disciplined for time management since I was five. I was a gymnast which consumed a lot of time so I had to manage my time from an early age. I write my priorities down and set dates when they need to be done by. I also make sure I work my class around my gymnastics. If I have a huge test on a day I know I have have practice, I just do my best to get them both done.

HC: What’s your favorite part of cheerleading?
Elena: Stunting, I’m a flyer. I love being at football games and performing. I also love practicing and perfecting different stunts then finally being able to perform them in front of a crowd.

HC: What’s the most stressful part of cheerleading?
Elena: Probably balancing my time for everything. It’s also stressful trying to teach new girls things that I already know, and having to go over something again and again so we’re all on the same page.

HC: What inspires you?
Elena: Going out in front of a crowd and performing. It is awesome being a leader and having other people look up to you.

HC: What are your plans after college?
Elena: I would really like to open up a gym. I’d also enjoy working with other athletes for sports enhancements. I possible can see myself coaching a high school cheerleading team as well.
