Her Campus UCLA sat down with USAC running candidate, Ashley Cartwright to see what makes her shine!
Her Campus: What about the position of Cultural Affairs Commissioner appealed to you?
Ashley Cartwright: This commission is the office that highlights diversity through artistry. It unites Bruins in a way that is unique and allows students to partake in mulitculturalism. I feel so passionate about what this office stands for because I am someone who embraces diversity and feels that it is one of the things that make UCLA so profound. While this commission does plan some amazing programs the reward i hope to gain if elected is the opportunity to connect Bruins in a way that only art and culture can do.
HC: How do you think your experiences and involvement on campus (dm, gphi, sex squad, wac…) have prepared you for a USAC position?
AC: Being a World Arts and Cultures major has enhanced my artistic eye and love for embracing diversity which is why I am so passionate about the CAC. As Director in the General Representitive 2 office in USAC and having held leadership positions both in Dance Marathon and in the UCLA Sex Squad I have created great networks. Nonetheless i have learned what it takes to be a successful advocate, event organizer and fearless leader which will drive me in being the best possible Cultural Affairs Commissioner.
HC: What change on campus are you most passionate about making?
AC: What our student government does directly effects us and i believe that the changes that USAC accomplish should be recognized. I hope to improve the visibility of USAC to ensure that students know that USAC is there
to work for them, the students. Tons of great programs, events, and changes that occur on this campus are because of the people elected for student government and i believe that students should know who to come to when they seek support and change in the future.
HC: You are very motivated and are involved in many activities. What advice do you have for Bruins trying to balance work and play?
AC: My number 1 piece of advice is to make the work you do worth the amount of playing you do. I belive that more fun is had when hard work is accomplished and the way to balance these two very important concepts is by prioritizing! The saying is ” Work Hard, Play Hard” and I believe this motto works if its done in this order. Anything is possible if the “anything” is worth something. That is how I balance work with play!
HC: What makes you the most proud about being a Bruin?
AC: To be honest, I am proud to be a Bruin because of the people that surround me. They are inspirational. They are dedicated. They are intelligent. They are incredible. My fellow Bruins are the people that make me proud to be who I am today. They encourage me to be the best person I can possibly be and to partake in everything this school has to offer. It is the people that surround me that make my UCLA experience something unforgettable.
GOOD LUCK IN THE ELECTIONS, ASHLEY! XO HC
