Place Profile: New Fieldhouse is a better Fieldhouse

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

Many UI students that arrived on campus before the 21-only ordinance took effect remember the obnoxious, noisy bar that sat at the southwest corner of the Pedestrian Mall.  Well I am happy to report that bar is finally gone.
The move to its current location at 118 S. Dubuque Street has been a pretty good makeover for the bar and former underage-drinking and dancing hotspot.
The sports décor still serves as the focal point for the much smaller sports bar, however the floors are not slippery and the smell of alcohol is a little less overwhelming.  It has returned to Iowa City as a normal college bar, which is a huge upgrade from the overrated fraternity party that it once was.  The entire building, including the bathrooms, is much cleaner and more customer-friendly here, making it a great replacement for Slippery Pete’s as well.
On Thursday’s they offer free chicken wings from eight to 10 p.m. as well as mugs of beer or liquor for $2.50, making it the perfect night to stop by and check the place out.
You’ll find that the staff is helpful and that the bar gets packed pretty quickly.  The crowd is much older and more mature, but it still retains the college sports bar atmosphere that a lot of people enjoy.  There’s also a large variety of guys that hang out there, making it a good place for single women to check out.
You may not have liked the place originally, but I’d challenge even the biggest haters of the old bar to check out the new location.  I expect that you, like myself, will be surprised at the improvements and may actually enjoy yourself.
