Hi there!
We’re pushing back the post on how shorter showers have powered my life just one more day!
Rounding up the laundry posts, reader “Oxen” points out that waiting to wash clothing conserves both money and water:
“so, if I own a bunch of pairs of jeans, but slack a bit on washing them in between wearing them, it’s a tiny bit less bad, right? (It’s both environmentally and economically friendly. Less wasted water, and $2.75 saved on a load of laundry. yay!)”
Today: Changing the Unchangeable
So, hopefully you’re taking shorter showers. Congratulations, you’re saving thousands of gallons of water! But what about the areas in your life where you’ve changed your habits and still waste so much water? Every time you flush the toilet, you use 4 gallons of water; your faucet uses 3 gallons of water per minute, but you already turn the faucet off while you lather your hands brush your teeth. In your quest to save water, don’t stop at just changing your habits. Outdated technology can waste enormous amounts of water.
There are three primary water-saving devices that can be installed in your bathroom.
- Low-flow showerheads: Installing a shower head that is specifically designed to save water can save up to 5 gallons of water per minute! Coupled with shorter showers, low-flow showerheads can help you save a lot of agua.
- Dual-flush handle: Installing a dual-flush mechanism in toilets cuts water usage per flush from 6 gallons to an average of 1.6 gallons.
- Faucet aerators: Faucet aerators save up to 1 gallon of water each minute by combining the water that comes out of your faucet with air.
Advocate your college’s Office of Sustainabilty to install these across campus; not only will these water-saving devices seriously increase your college’s green credibility, but the cost of the devices will be offset by lower utility costs in just a few years!
Have you seen any of these (or other!) nifty water-saving devices around your campus?
Today’s shower:
Five minutes! Need to start speeding things up around here….I just showered after writing the first half of this post and contemplating my reading for tomorrow’s class. I need to inject a sense of urgency into my showers again. Tomorrow, I’ll shower right before a scheduled event and see how fast I move.
If I didn’t need to wash my hair everyday, my showers would be quicker (despite the short length of my hair). Unfortunately, since I suffer from seasonal allergies, I need to religiously wash my hair every night, otherwise the pollen in my hair keeps me up.
Scent of the day- cucumber mint. For some reason, it reminds me of muffins; cucumber mint-scented Earth Lovers Shower Gel might be particularly appropro for pre-breakfast showerers!
Come back tomorrow to finally find out how power showers are turning my life around, a product review of The Body Shop’s Deodry deodorant, and to see if I’ll have regained my ability to zip through showers.
