Great news ladies, it is FINALLY warming up. Sundresses, flip-flops and bikinis are just around the corner. While some days bring spring to us a little faster than others, other days it can still be a bit too chilly for just a dress and flip-flops. This brings me to our topic this week: how to transition your wardrobe from winter to spring.
Living in Blacksburg, we have all adapted ourselves (some maybe better than others) to the subzero season we call winter here, so it is always nice to see that first flower bloom (even if it gets covered with snow a week later) and the first hints of spring emerge. For those of us Blacksburgians, the transition can be a little weird; you never know when winter will come sneak up that one last time. But, that doesn’t mean we can’t be excited spring is here and dress accordingly. There are a few trends I have noticed in various blogs, websites and magazines that make the transition simple and smooth.
1. Add color. Spring is colorful and you should be too.
Color is the easiest way to add a flash of spring to your wardrobe. You can do anything from a bright t-shirt to a playful handbag. This year, my favorite way to add color to my outfits is nail polish. I love nail polish! It makes adding color so easy. The possibilities are endless, and if you hate it, all you need is about 5 minutes to take it off. Check out http://www.opi.com they have a fantastic collection of nail polish. They also have one really cool feature called “try it on” where you can see what the nail polish would look like on a hand. You customize skin tone and nail length. Pretty cool.
2. Layer, but lightly. No more heavy coats.Â
Since you cannot always guarantee 80+ degree days, and the weather changes constantly throughout the day here, layering is key. Instead of layering with that big heavy puffer, or plain Jane black North Face, try sweaters, leggings and tunics. Layering is the perfect solution to unpredictable spring weather. Start with an oversized T-shirt, or long tunic top, throw on some leggings underneath, pick out a cute sweater (perfect place for your pop of color), maybe a belt if you are feeling adventurous, shoes (cute flats are always in, but I know some of us just can’t live without flip-flops), and if there is a chance of rain trench coats are huge this season. There you go. You are now prepared to be on campus all day long and not be uncomfortable with the weather at any point. You are welcome.
3. Change your shoes. Stop wearing Uggs.
Getting out of those nasty, stinky Uggs is always so refreshing for the feet. They have been suffocating for too long.  (Don’t forget to clean up those winter feet with a pumice stone and some nail polish before you show them off.) When I think spring shoes I think wedges and sandals. Both are great to throw on with jeans for those chillier nights when you still want to feel springy. Wedges are the best way to get taller (we can’t all be Gisele) and stay comfortable. There are so many options out there from Yves Saint Laurent http://tiny.cc/0tn3h (I wish) to Target http://tiny.cc/m0yhf (more my speed). Have fun incorporating these into your wardrobe! After all, a girl can never have enough shoes. Also flats are fun for the spring, as well as your various sandal options.Â
OK ladies now you are armed with everything you need to bust out of your winter rut and get into spring.
