Day one of the Earth Lovers Three-Minute Shower Challenge was eye opening. My “quick” shower lasted nine minutes. In two weeks time, I’ll need to have cut that time by two-thirds! The task seems a little daunting.
Ever the academic, I tried to define the reasons why my showers last so long.
- I don’t know how long my showers last. It’s a simple reason with a simple fix; next time I shower, I’ll wear my watch (this time, I just looked at the clock in my bedroom before I got in the shower and after I got out).
- After a long day of going to classes, extra curriculars, studying, and work, I tend to use my shower time to relax. I need to find a way to relax that uses less water! I’m not crazy about the idea of taking up a new activity in my typical twenty-minute shower slot; to me, the point of relaxing is to pare down your life, not to make it more hectic. I think I’ll start doing one quick, nice thing for myself toward the end of the every day- a face mask…okay, running out of ideas already. Help!
- This is closely tied to my first and second reasons- I rarely have an incentive to make my showers quick. Since I shower right before bed, there’s no reason for me to rush when I’m under the spray of warm water. I know that wasting water is awful for the environment, but there’s nothing like the urgency of knowing I’ll be late to make me hurry up. Maybe I should start showering between classes or before dinner.
