DJ Bex has been music to student’s ears through our local station WKNC Raleigh 88.1 fm here on NC State’s Campus. Rebekah Zabarsky, a junior in Design Studies would call herself a “very curious person.” But those who know her best would say she is artsy and pretty down to earth.
“I’m pretty adaptable to my surroundings, meaning I can chill on my friend’s porch on a sunny Sunday afternoon or dance on the stage at my friend’s show downtown.”
Rebekah’s curiosity makes her the perfect “people person,” which works out nicely when she needs to take calls from fans that rock out to her shows on the radio. She is outgoing and loves to make new friends the quality any radio personality needs to be successful and she is just that.
DJ Bex has been DJing since here second semester of her freshman year here at State. Although she has hosted alone, she now is a Co-host with the amazing C. Creature. The fun in the studio shows on their Thursday morning time slot from 9-11am.
“We play mostly indie rock, but we’re both super into vintage sounds, like from the ’50s and ’60s. Anything with a rockabilly or blues vibe is going to get played on our show!”
However, her own person style of music is very diverse. She listens to anything from Sublime and Slighty Stoopid to Gwen Stefani and Fiona Apple. Her taste also ranges farther because she has no problems jamming out to conscious rap like Talib Kweli, Mos Def, and Common.
Besides being a voice to look out for, Rebekah is also very involved in her sorority, Delta Gamma, holding positions that work with the alumnae and holding a VP position.
“I’d say these two experiences have created a pretty unique college experience, mainly because of the different exposure I get from each group. I’m able to really indulge in my girly side with the sorority, then go to the radio station and hang out with a totally different crowd. I think it further shows my eclectic personality.”
Those who know Rebekah wouldn’t have a negative thing to say about the girl that balances her time between design, her sorority, and student media. Anyone who says she has two personalities: DJ Bex or Rebekah are wrong; the truth is she is the same outgoing, carefree person on or off the air. So make sure to check her and C. Creature out every Thursday from 9-11a.m.
