Every year when March comes along I get an overwhelming feeling of excitement and a disturbing feeling of dread at the same time. I can’t wait for the smorgasbord of free SXSW concerts, but I can definitely wait for the overwhelming influx of people that invade Austin. I’m a huge advocate of local music, and I love any event that gives lesser-known bands a place to play music and gain exposure. However, with each passing year I find the stress of maneuvering between events excruciating. Finally, after two years of SXSW participation I think I have finally realized what could make my SXSW experience all the more bearable.
Stay away from any kind of vehicle transportation!
I know this is a “duh” realization, but I have finally conceded to this requirement.
Multiple people suggested riding a bike everywhere, but I did not heed their warnings. I attempted driving downtown after deciding I didn’t mind paying over $10 for parking, but upon arriving downtown every lot I came across was full. The next time I attempted making my way downtown I decided to take the bus, but even the bus failed me. Traffic was so heavy taking the bus back to campus took longer than if I had just walked. I suppose I could have used a cab, but that wouldn’t have solved the traffic problem or the expensive price.
There are many places that exclusively rent out bikes just for that week, but I personally plan on investing in a bike soon.
I sure do love SXSW, but I sure do hate the stress it can bring.
