While some were concentrating on their tans and BAC’s for the last week, I focused on my favorite thing… Food. I planned for weeks ahead of time about what I would make, what markets I would visit, and where I would dine out.
By the time spring break rolled around this list became ridiculously long, and I had yet to factor in doctor’s appointments, errands, time with family and friends, and just some good old time doing absolutely nothing. So sadly, I did not get to do everything I had hoped, but what I did do, I will never forget!
If you’re a devoted viewer of Food Network, chances are you know who Mario Batali is and may be familiar with his heavenly Italian creations. Good ol’ Molto Mario has now made it possible to experience everything Italy right in downtown Manhattan. Eataly is a breath-taking mecca of bread, produce, meats, cheeses, pastries, chocolates, gelato, coffee, fish, pasta, and of course, pizza.
This completely authentic food and wine marketplace opened at the end of last summer, and has become a renowned spot for foodies, locals, and tourists alike. In addition to being a transcendent grocery shopping experience, Eataly is home to six restaurants. When I visited with my mom, we decided to have lunch at the counter of Salumi & Formaggio. Believe me when I say that one of best thing I ate all week was a plate of cold cuts, cheeses, bread, and jam.
However, this lunch was topped as I was walking past the mozzarella maker. He was handing out some samples of fresh mozzarella to some customers as they watched him gather and shape the curds in a vat of hot water. Being the nosy person that I am, I interrupted and asked if I could try some as well. I’ve always been a fan of mozzarella, but I have never had anything like that little piece of warm, soft cheese. It melted in my mouth and
slid down my throat much too quickly, but the experience was nothing short of orgasmic!
Eataly is located in the Flatiron district of the city, and can be found on the corner of 23rd and 5th.
