Over the past few years, the house/electronic music scene has exploded at the University of Maryland. Whether it’s a cultural phenomenon that’s attracting listeners from all over or whether the New Jersey fist-pumpers invading UMD have finally rubbed off on us, we should all be grateful for this new musical genre. And this April, one of the leaders of the movement will grace us with his presence.

Dutch DJ Tiesto will make his way to DC April 9 for a performance at the DC Armory, one of Washington’s premier venues that can house 10,000. Although tickets are not yet sold out, there’s no doubt that the show will be packed. Panorama Productions and Glow Washington DC are presenting the event, which will run from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. for audiences 18 and older. Tickets are $40 for general admission.

The crowd went wild at Tiesto’s performance at Glow on October 11, 2009.

The 42-year-old DJ got his start DJing at school parties in the Netherlands when he was only 14, but he didn’t really gain popularity until the release of album In My Memory in 2001. He’s responsible for hit tracks such as “C’mon” featuring Diplo and “Silence” featuring Sarah McLachlan, and in 2007, he was given a weekly two-hour radio show called Tiesto’s Club Life, which has been immensely popular.

Some of his claim to fames include performing live at the 2004 summer Olympics opening ceremony in Athens, Greece, making him the first DJ to perform at an Olympic event, and being named DJ Magazine’s “World’s No.1 DJ” three consecutive times. His album Elements of Life reached #1 on the Dutch album chart as well as the “Billboard Top Electronic Albums” in the U.S., and he received a Grammy nomination in 2008. Tiesto has worked with artists Nelly Furtado and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, among others, and he was recently voted ‘The Greatest DJ Of All Time’ by Mixmag.

UMD students are already psyched about the event, and many have already purchased tickets. “It’s going to be a sick event,” said senior communication major Julia Jurgovan. “I’ve never seen Tiesto play at a huge venue like this, and I think the amount of people and energy that night is going to be intense.”

“Tiesto’s the most famous DJ out right now, and I think a ton of Maryland kids are going to go,” senior PR major Marina Irony said. “It’s a great excuse to get out of College Park and see an awesome performer.”
