This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

Hometown: Los Angeles, CA
Major: Comm. Studies and Spanish

Nicknames: The Effster; Wacky Cracky

Wacky Cracky?
I made an email address saying ‘wacky cracky’ when I was younger – I don’t know why – but I’ve been too lazy to change it, so I make new addresses that link to that one. Sometimes, though, I forget to change my outgoing address to something other than the ‘wacky cracky’ one, and of course, it’s always to a professor, so they’ll always reply back to my emails saying like, “Wacky cracky? Really?” Some girls found out about it and like to call me Wacky Cracky now.

Likes: elephants, red pandas, double-stick tape

Dislikes: winter quarter, people who talk in the library, crossing the street

What do you on campus?
I play clarinet on the marching band. I teach sexual decision making for Peer Health Exchange. I volunteer at Centro Romero, a Spanish learning center where they teach English – it’s like an ESL center. I’m also treasurer for my sorority, Kappa Delta.

Which is your favorite?
I don’t know if I can pick a favorite. Volunteering is a lot of fun; teaching high school students about sex is also fun. But you know, school spirit is great too. I don’t think I can choose a favorite!

Tell me more about how you got involved in the marching band.
My high school was really small so we didn’t have one. I thought it would be a fun way to meet people and to be school spirited. A lot of people do things like P-Wild and I saw this as a way for me to get involved. It can be really time consuming, but it’s worth it. Everyone is just so in to it, and it’s fun to go to the football games. The spirit really catches on.

Spring break plans?
I’m going to New Orleans to build houses. It’s kind of like ASA, it’s called NOLA. I thought it was really interesting because there are people from lots of different states going. I wanted to see New Orleans, too.

What you look for in a guy:
He has to be able to do his own laundry
I don’t know. What do I look for in a guy? He can’t take himself too seriously. You should never take yourself too seriously to be able to laugh at yourself, and you can’t take things so seriously that you can’t get over it.

Why we love Effie:
Not only is Effie the sweetest, most adorable person you’ll ever meet, she is also completely down-to-earth and confident. She’s like the girl-next-door combined with the drive and personality that makes her successful and truly inspirational to those around her. She’s also got a great sense of humor, meaning she’s always a lot of fun and very easy to be around.

Monica is a sophomore at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. She spent her early years growing up in a small town in Minnesota, but spent the last half of her life in Seoul, South Korea where she developed a city girl love for good food finds and fashion. Journalism has been a major part of her life, but she can also be found relaxing with a cup of coffee, watching movies, and spending time with loved ones. Though she has a tough exterior, Monica is actually a romantic who loves the power of words, the importance of strength in any endeavor, and who always wears her heart on her sleeve.
