Self-Love with “Born this Way”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

Lady Gaga has made a splash in the music industry, establishing herself as a groundbreaking artist not afraid to push boundaries and take risks. After her video for “Bad Romance,” it seemed hard to believe that she could top the video’s creativity and obscurity that is so characteristically Gaga. However, with “Born This Way,” Stefani Germanotta has done it again.

The video of her newest hit begins with a sci-fi-esque approach, as Lady Gaga emerges with a blonde beehive-style wig, heavy black eye make-up and what looks like a plastic eyeball attached to her chin. Have I mentioned that this all takes place inside a glass cube, floating in space?

Of course, if you are familiar with the artist’s performance style, this outfit is merely one of the many costumes she displays in the video. Others include matching bra and panties clad with thin, silver chains and a classic tuxedo with pointed shoulder pads and skeletal face paint with a pink and blonde high ponytail.
Similar to her video collaboration with Beyoncé for “Telephone,” “Born This Way” is a mini-movie with an introduction that lasts approximately 2 and a half minutes before the actual music begins.

The message of the song, undoubtedly more explicit than previous lyrics of “I want your leather-studded kiss in the sand” or “She hides true love en su bolsillo,” is that of a feel-good anthem that promotes self-worth, tolerance and acceptance. The chorus consists of the catchy “I’m beautiful in my way / ’cause God makes no mistakes / I’m on the right track, baby / I was born this way.”

“Born This Way” displays a side of Gaga that remains both new and fresh, and with almost 14 million views on YouTube, it is safe to say that the majority of her fans agree.
