Lose the Freshman 15: Looking good sideways

I always heard that writing down your goals was a great way to stay motivated—especially with weight loss. Honestly, I haven’t really tried it before. But since Jillian Michael’s herself claims this is pretty important for people trying to lose weight, I figured I should give it a try.

Goal #1

To look as confident as I feel on the inside.

I know this statement probably seems hard to measure, but this is the main reason I want to lose weight, as I mentioned in my first post when starting this journey with SELF magazine.  But whenever I dream about the future or close my eyes and envision what it would be like accepting my diploma or walking into a big name magazine’s office for an interview—I imagine myself cool, confident, and rocking a fabulously professional pencil skirt. Sure, I already do that now. But let’s be honest with ourselves—I want to be a health writer. Who’s going to hire an overweight health writer? Sure, I can analyze those reports and put them into easy to understand magazine-readernese, but do I look the part? No, looks aren’t anything, but I DO want to be healthy. Heck, that’s why I love to write about health. I want the WORLD to be healthy. Why not start with myself?

So that’s goal number one. And when I’m done with the journey, I’m going to buy myself an awesome new businessy outfit and rock the streets of New York the way I was always meant to.

Goal #2Picture9

Be in shape enough to paint my body and run around half-naked.

What? We all do strange things in college. One night freshman year, my art major best friend and I painted our bodies and ran around outside in sports bras (which I NEVER do). We called it our “women’s liberation” and just danced about outside, knocking on all our friends’ dorms and enjoying the around 30 degree Boone weather. Hannah and I talked about possibly doing it again before we graduate, which I would love to do for old time’s sake. But it would be comforting to know that I’m not jiggling every which way while celebrating my body. I want to celebrate my body being healthy, and what a great way to send off my senior year?

Goal #3

I want to look great from the side.Picture10

I’ve never been that person to de-tag myself from pictures on Facebook or to shy away from group photos just because I feel fat that day. Heck, I feel like I take pretty decent pictures most of the time, and I love to flaunt my curves in cute dresses with accessorizing belts. But from the side… those pictures are probably my only kryptonite. I just want to cringe when I see them. And with getting married in about a year and a half, I’ll be standing sideways before family, friends, and God (Thank goodness my man will be facing me from the front lol). I’m not going to become one of those obsessive brides who wants to be a size two on her wedding day (Hello? Did you hear me? I LOVE MY CURVES! And these hips will never be a size two). But with everyone staring at me when I’m up there at the altar, I want to look like a princess bride—not a pregnant one.

So honestly, I don’t care how much weight I lose. I’ve never been very good with numbers. But honeys, if I can look good from the side, I’ll be a very happy girl.

And those are my three main goals. The best part? With SELF’s Jump Start Diet, I get daily tips emailed to me so I can be reminded to stay on track. And for the bad days, Jillian has a whole page of “instant inspiration” to keep me feeling good about myself while finally taking care of myself.

What are your goals? I’d love to hear them! And let me know if you sign up for the Jump Start Diet too. I’d love to have some buddies to do this journey with! Email me at NikkiRoberti@HerCampus.com or Tweet me @Nikki_Roberti anytime!
