As March rolls around we have a lot to look forward to. Campus is starting to warm up, Unofficial is just around the corner and most importantly spring break is quickly approaching.Â
When you ask most parents what college spring breaks are like, they’ll answer with too much fun, alcohol and staying up late.  Trips to Panama City Beach and Mexico are two of the most popular destinations for college spring breaks. Since Panama City is along the coast of the Florida panhandle, driving is an easy and very affordable way of transportation.Â
Students like freshman Alexandra Bizios planned their spring breaks in advance for Miami’s Ultra Music Festival. This 3-day, sold-out electronic music fest has more than 75 confirmed artists performing. With over 100,000 people in attendance last year, this year promises to be another success for electronic music lovers.
“I am so excited for Miami. It’s going to be a 24-hour car ride, but so worth it because it’s three days of my favorite music. I can’t wait to see every single artist,” said Bizios.
If music and the beach don’t make it to the top of your list, how about immersing yourself into a whole new culture? For those of us who stuck around Urbana-Champaign this semester, many opt to visit friends studying abroad. A full week of indulging in nightlife, catching up, trying new foods and making new friends and memories only skim the surface.Â
“I am going to Amsterdam and London this spring break and visiting a lot of my friends abroad. We are all going to meet up in Amsterdam and going to see The Black Keys in concert,” said junior Leksi Culafic.
“I am so pumped to go to Verona. My piece of advice for anyone is don’t think, just go. I was so happy when I bought my ticket and can’t wait to see everybody,” says junior Johnny Cifelli.
If none of these options are in your cards, there of course is the freedom to sleep in everyday and catch up with family and friends at home. This is also another great time to network for future internships or even participate in an externship program, which is similar to job shadowing.
“My plans for a spring break in Florida kind of fell through this year so I am staying home and job shadowing a lot in Chicago. Since I am interested in public relations and U of I doesn’t offer it as a major, I am going to some communication firms while at home,” said sophomore Katie Bates.
Whether you’re going home, going halfway across the world or living one week in hot weather, it’s definitely time to relax and enjoy this short, yet well-deserved vacation. Before we know it, finals will be over and done with and summer will be knocking on our door.
