Our Campus Correspondant Kathryn Sullivan

I decided to take our president from behind the computer and into the spotlight. Meet the President and Editor of Her Campus UTK, Kathryn Sullivan. Kathryn is a journalism major at UT focusing in magazine writing. She applied in December 2010 to launch a branch of Her Campus at UT, and here we are! She works at a local bowling alley, a job she’s had since she was 16. She is also interning with the local Southern Professional Hockey team the Knoxville Ice Bears. She loves all her jobs including her newest position as our Her Campus Editor!

 
Fun facts about Kathryn… she loves to travel and she loves elephants! So I thought the picture of her in a garden in England (with shrubbery shaped like elephants) was a great pic!
 
What made you apply for Her Campus?
I first heard about Her Campus through a Facebook friend. She began writing for Her Campus JMU, and had messaged me to participate in a survey for her article. So I went to the site to check it out, and of course I loved it! So one day, while checking out the new articles, I saw an ad for launching your own branch. I thought… I could do that! I’ve always wanted to work on a magazine at UT, so why not bring the magazine myself?
 
When did you hear that you had been accepted to launch the branch?
I was in Nashville helping my best friend move, and I opened my computer to look up something on the Internet. I went to my e-mail, and I had a message from Her Campus telling me I had been accepted to launch a branch! I was so excited!
 
Why did you want to bring Her Campus to UT?
I wanted a chance to put my skills to the test. I love to write, and I want to be a journalist so I am all about getting as much experience as possible. I believe in taking advantage of every opportunity you’re given. So I knew this was a great chance to work with a real magazine. I also really wanted girls at UT to learn about Her Campus. I have so much fun reading the articles. I really appreciate what the founders have created, and I wanted to paly a roll in sharing that with other girls. I also wanted to present journalism students with an outlet to publish their work. This isn’t just an awesome opportunity for the readers and me; it’s great for students looking for experience and publication.
 
What made you interested in writing and being a journalism major?
I’ve always enjoyed writing. I knew when it was time to pursue a specific career, I needed to choose something that I could get a good job in, but more importantly, something that I would be happy doing for the rest of my life. So far, Her Campus is my favorite writing experience. Maybe that’s a good sign for my future in magazine.
 
What do you have planned for Her Campus in the future?
I really want Her Campus UTK to be great! I want to have tons of content. I want to have events and meetings that bring people together to celebrate the women on this campus. I really hope that other people get as excited as I am about the site!
