Boost Your Ego on Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Valentine’s Day.
            Singles Awareness Day.
Call it what you want, but it’s still only Feb. 14.
And as this day is just like any other day of the year, we want you to try to take your mind off of the label Hallmark has bestowed upon the day to remind us single ladies that we’re still single.
But rejoice in being single with these tips that are sure to boost your ego near Valentine’s Day:

1.     Go Out: Take yourself out for a night on the town with a group of your closest friends. Get dressed up, make a reservation at your favorite restaurant and enjoy the company of yourself and your friends. A night out is the perfect recipe to take your thoughts away from the holiday.

2.     Treat Yourself: Make yourself feel special by treating yourself to a little something special. Plan a day at the spa to get your toes, nails and hair done. While you’re at it, get a facial or a massage to relieve some stress in your life and bring some inner harmony within. Afterward, you’ll look great and feel even better.

3.     Do Something Different: Take a day to try something you’ve never done before, as doing so will release endorphines, which are the body’s way of making us feel happy. Go on a hike with a close friend on a trail you’ve never explored before, bring a picnic with you and enjoy the open air while you’re at it.  Find an interesting local attraction that you’ve never had the chance to visit and check it out. Or, do something adventurous like skydiving or taking a spur-of-the-moment road trip to a nearby town with a few friends. Any of fun ideas are sure to remind you why being single can still be fun.

4.     Get Moving: Get your body in motion and your mind off of Valentine’s Day. Take a Yoga or Pilates class to relax your body and mind. Go for a run or walk in your neighborhood with your best friend. Scope out a new trail in town and spend the day biking in the sunshine.  Play a game of pick-up soccer or basketball with your group of friends. Regardless of what you do, getting physical is not only healthy, but enjoyable as well.

5.     Energize Your Brain: Put your brain to good use by grabbing a new book and heading out to a local park to spend the day reading in the sun. Pick up your favorite magazine at the grocery story and lay in bed reading every single page. Check out a local museum that you’ve never had the opportunity to discover before and appreciate the beauty of art. Anything that you do to activate your brain is sure to take Valentine’s Day off your mind.

Regardless of how you spend the dreaded day, make this Valentine’s Day one to remember. Do something for yourself, or your friends or your special someone if you happen to have them in your life. Make it count, as every day should.

Sara Kaner was born and raised in Santa Barbara, California and first fell in love with journalism as a freshman in high school thanks to her wonderful Intro to Journalism teacher. A family move brought her to Fort Myers, Florida the summer after her freshman year of high school, but she continued to pursue an interest in journalism. She is in her second year at the University of Florida and is pursuing a dual degree in Public Relations and Psychology. She is heavily involved on the UF campus and dedicates most of her time to her various organizations and to her friends. She loves people, magazines, sports and social media, and she hopes to combine all three in her job someday. For now, she aspires to attend Law School and specialize in Media Law. She secretly aspires to be Chelsea Handler, but she's happy being herself for the moment, just as long as she can lose the freshman 15 this semester.
Hola! My name is Victoria and it is a pleasure to meet you. I was born and raised in Key West, Fla. Surprisingly; people do actually live there. I'm a fourth year journalism student at the University of Florida, and I am obsessed with food. I watch ungodly amounts of the Food Network. I love to dance, write and swim to my hearts content. I don't know what I would do without my Crackberry and listening to the Silversun Pickups makes me sane.
