“Going Greek” was a phrase that did not exist in my vocabulary throughout my years in high school or even the week before formal Recruitment at Emory. I always pictured Greek Life as something for dumb girls who (for some strange and twisted reason) loved drowning themselves in silly drama that made life more complicated than it needed to be.
Once I made it to college, I realized that many of the upperclassman girls I’d met and loved at Emory were in sororities. Eventually, they convinced me to try the rush process and I figured it couldn’t hurt. Worst case, it would prove to be just as shallow and on-the-surface “fake” as I’d figured it would be all along… but at least I’d still come out having met some new people at Emory.
Fast forward to January 2009… I ended up accepting a bid to a sorority and I can now say with complete confidence that it is one of the best decisions I have made in college. I realize now that my preconceptions and sorority stereotypes were just plain false. I’m glad I gave Greek Life a chance and I’m so thankful for what it has offered me in my college experience — a family at Emory, a support system, and sincere and genuine friends for whom I’d do anything. Go Greek!
