Genesis Fulmer, an ambitious junior majoring in psychology, who sees herself one day opening her own practice sat down with us to chat about style, having confidence and staying true to yourself.
Getting Dressed
“I just throw anything on,” admits this bi-cultural cutie, who is a lovely mélange of Dominican and German ethnic backgrounds. “I don’t even pick out my outfit in the morning. I close my eyes at night and see what’s in my closet because I’m so lazy!” That’s hard to believe since she always looks so effortlessly chic.
All Wrapped Up
According to Genesis, no wardrobe is complete without a stylish scarf. “As a lady I was always told to at least throw on an accessory, a scarf. Make something pop.” And a lady is always true to her word. We love the vivid printed scarf that she has on now!
Confessions of a Shopaholic
“I’m always shopping. There’s a thrift store in Trenton that I go to. Forever 21, Express, Heritage, H&M.” She loves to shop at thrift stores and hunts for unique finds such as, “over-sized blazers and high-waisted shorts.” And, it’s also cheap! “I’m not rich, so I’ma make good with what I have.
Stylish Inspirations
“Rihanna. I love her style…Beyoncé, Amerie. And one of my best friends, I look up to her. Ohmygod, I love her! She can dress!” The admiration she has for her is evident in her widened brown eyes and the watermelon smile across her face. “I always go to her for advice. I like her risk-taking. She’s one of the reasons why I stepped out of my comfort zone. For me, my best friend is the next step up, someone to look for [inspiration] and adapt my own style.”
Genesis says that she also likes to look inside shops for inspiration. “I get inspired by what’s in their windows. A lot of people knock Forever 21, but I like their display windows, how they dress it up. Sometimes, even if I don’t buy it there, I’ll look at a mannequin and I’ll remember [the look] in my head.”
Off Days
“Tuesdays and Thursdays you will not see me dressed up because I go straight to class to work,” Genesis admits. Hey, every fashionista is allowed a break, right?
Purse Necessities
“Ohmygod, my ChapStick! Where’s my ChapStick now?” She says, feverishly digging through her black bag. “I have a fetish. I will apply ChapStick a hundred times a day. I have like seven ChapSticks in here.” There are also some other essentials that Genesis says she simply cannot leave the house (or dorm) without. “My wallet and keys…and random papers.”
Be Crazy
“If I like it, I like it. I know some people will be like, ‘what are you wearing?’ and I’m like ‘what are you wearing?’ and they’ll just stare at me.” She says with a laugh and a shrug. “People are like ‘what’s that?’ But at the end of the day, I like it and eventually people are going to catch on.”
Style Upgrade
“I used to just wear the basics,” which she defines as “jeans, Uggs, and a white t-shirt”. “My sophomore year, I just didn’t care. I was so in the habit of wearing sweatpants. But my mom always told me ‘you never know who you’re going to bump into’. You never know if you’re going to bump into your future boss, or your future husband.” Now, she knows, “the days you feel your worst, you should look your best.” Genesis, we’d like to second that notion.
Dress For You
“You are your own person. If you are a jeans and a white-tee type of girl, then bump it. Don’t try to fit in and wear skirts and stockings,” Genesis advises to all you College Queens. “Just be comfortable, because if you’re not, it’ll show.”
Strut Out of the Box
Stylish girls know that everyday-chic begins with being creative; Genesis concurs, “I don’t like the whole matching thing…I can’t just wear blue and gray. I’ll throw green in there or something like that.” Genesis is animated and exuberant when she continues. “I do a lot of layering and a lot of patterns…and rings.”
Along With the Territory
Genesis says that she has had her share of eye-rolls and snickers from the ladies. “It comes along with girls being fashionable, being pretty, being smart, there’s always going to be people out there trying to knock you down…and [it’s] just because they have nothing better to do or because they are jealous. They’re looking up to you.”
Do You
“Do what you wanna do because confidence is beautiful! Someone with confidence can go such a long way.” This fashion darling adds, “If you really feel like you want to step out your zone then do it, because if you think about it, there are girls out there that do dress up. Have fun, you’re in college.”
