So you’ve just spent a lot of money and time coloring your hair and you’re absolutely loving your new shade. But then along comes the summer heat and sun, threatening to fade your fabulous new color. Fear not, hair lovers, Chrissy’s Beauty School has some tips from celebrity stylist Riccardo Maggiore to help you make your color last long into the fall.
Maggiore, who has worked with Sarah Jessica Parker, Brooke Shields and Helena Christensen at his NYC salon, recommends the following:
1. Avoid daily shampooing in the summer.
Sure, all that humidity and heat has your hair screaming for a washing, but stay strong, my friend, and resist the urge to wash your hair every day in the summer. Doing so only dries out your hair and causes color to fade faster than those short and sweet summer days.
Substitute daily washing for a dry shampoo in between washes. To apply it, spray at the roots, massage into your scalp and brush the product through your locks.
2. Give your hair a break from the heat.
Sometimes you feel like you need a break from the intense summer heat. Well, your hair needs the occasional break from heat tools such as curling irons and blow dryers too. Using heat tools on your hair causes color to fade faster, so accept what nature gave you and let your hair relax a bit in the summer.
If you absolutely need to use a blow dryer or flat iron, make sure to use a heat protective spray before styling because this will help create a barrier around hair and protect your strands from extreme temperatures
3. Maintain your color, redheads.
The heat fades red hair color faster. If you’re rocking red tresses like Rihanna, consider weekly or bi-weekly gloss treatments at the salon to help maintain your color.
