Yesterday I attended a mentorship meeting with Nazik Hasan, wonderful attorney from Riverside county. While talking with them, we discussed many of the requirements that I needed to fulfill in order to be able to apply to law school. So if you are planning on applying to law school sometime soon, here are the requirements and some of the advice that I have learned.

Work on your personal statement

This was something that they recommended I get started on since it takes multiple edits to get the final copy. Apart from that, she mentioned that it was important to learn more about myself in order to do this so that it connects more to who I am as a person and why this is the career path that is great for me.

Study for the LSAT

The LSAT is one of the key things that colleges look at when deciding who and who not to admit. She mentioned how it is important to study beforehand because it’s not just an intuitive test. Apart from that, the test takes more time than regular exams so  practicing being in that type of environment is necessary. She also mentioned the different ways that I could study for the LSAT and one of them was prep-courses. She mentioned how she used Test-Masters, but everyone has a different preference. If possible,  get help from those since they know more about the exam with whichever test prep course you believe works best for you!

Shadow a lawyer

This was something she recommended I do in order to get a feel of what it’s like to be a lawyer and truly decide if this is what I want to get myself into. It also allows me to put something down on my resume to show I have interest and previous experience in working with the law.

After attending this meeting not only do I feel more prepared for getting my application ready, but I also feel more confident in myself. Even though a mentorship meeting isn’t a requirement, I would recommend attending one since you get to talk with someone who is already part of the field and has dealt with similar ups and downs that you might encounter later on. I knew that after speaking with her, I had a different outlook on my plan and how I would achieve my goals.
