Trends from past decades are constantly coming back. We get tired of some pieces of clothing, they become old and worn-out, and then, a couple of years later, they get revived and modernized. 90s fashion is probably one of the best out there in recent times; and because nostalgia sells, it was only a matter of time before this decade’s trends would take over our 2020s lives.
1. Sweater vests:
With quarantine came the need to find ways to occupy ourselves. A lot of people, myself included, filled up their time with hobbies such as knitting and crocheting. Of course, people wanted to wear pieces they created, which resulted in the sweater vests trend from the 90s coming back. Even though it’s becoming normalized in America during these past years, it’s been a part of korean fashion for much longer. Back in the day, we saw these accessories on people like Mathew Perry as his Friends character, Chandler Bing, and Alfonso Ribeiro in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Now, celebrities and influencers alike have been all over this trend, including Harry Styles, Bella Hadid and Emma Chamberlain.
2. Overalls
When I think about 90s fashion, these are one of the first things I think about. Absolutely everyone wore these timeless denim pieces, even my mom owns some from that decade; just remember Rachel Green’s (Jennifer Aniston) iconic looks. They are really versatile and comfortable and can be worn with anything from t-shirts to sweaters.
3. Cardigans
Cardigans were a big fashion staple during the 90s. You could always find a preppy character using one in any movie within the decade. You could say they never really went out of style, but they simply weren’t really considered a fashionable item—that was until now. Using cardigans as shirts has been all the rage for about a year and a half, but people anywhere can be seen using them over tops. They keep us warm from the chill without suffocating, plus they’re super cute!
4. Leather
Anything from pants to jackets or even vests could be found made from leather during the 90s. Now, this material is making a comeback. Faux leather of different colors is one of the trendiest things at the moment. My personal fave are those brown leather pants that can be found literally everywhere. Leather clothing can be dressed up or down quite easily, but no matter how you decide to style these pieces, you’ll still be the coolest person in the room.
5. Animal print
Animal print has always had its ups and downs throughout the years, and if you would have asked me two years ago if I would consider animal print to be trendy, I would have thought you were out of your mind. However, now I’ve been dying to get my hands on some cow print boots and a cheetah print skirt. I still think that during the 90s this trend was a bit tacky, but during the past year, animal print has been completely revamped, and now it’s better than ever.
Now that quarantine has made us more daring with our outfits, don’t be afraid to rock these trends. You might find a new favorite piece of clothing.
