Why Having Multiple Careers Might be the Right Path

The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus.
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

Growing up I was always asked “What do you want to be when you grow up?”. Usually kids in my class would answer- doctor, nurse, firefighter, etc. But I always wonder why we have to pick only ONE career? Why is it normal to stay long term with one specific company doing the same job? Statistics show that job hopping can hurt your chances of employment. However if you are someone that gets bored of routines easily then maybe having multiple careers might be the right path for you.

My Experience

Ever since I started high school I felt pressured to immediately choose a career path. While some people have always known what they enjoyed doing, I, on the other hand, felt confined when asked to choose only one career. Due to this, I struggled to choose a major during the first couple of years at FIU. I started off as a business major, then switched to Liberal Arts and finally Communications. During this transition, my GPA drastically dropped resulting in me going into academic probation. After receiving help from the University, I finally felt okay with NOT having a plan for after graduation. I was focused on the present and doing really well with the major that I chose. The one thing I knew for sure was that I wanted to experience different types of jobs, rather than just remaining in one. From this article, I hope to give guidance to those struggling with deciding, and know it is okay to try new careers.

So, next time someone asks about my dream career, I’ll just reply with “I have too many dreams”.
