On Monday night fashion’s most infamous event made its post-covid return. With the newest addition of social media influencers to the star studded guest list, this was easily Hollywood’s most anticipated night. Taking place at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, this year’s theme – In America: a Lexicon of Fashion looked to honor the classic designers and icons that have helped shape American fashion. Anna Wintour has outdone herself yet again with another successful charity event and certainly an interesting exhibit to add to the costume institute’s collection. We definitely saw some interesting looks walk the Met stairs, but these six stars absolutely shined…
Taylor Hill
Former Victoria Secret angel Taylor Hill definitely turned heads with her beautiful light blue ensemble. She wore an Atelier Versace fall 2015 couture gown and heels with complementary David Yurman jewelry. Her dress was very on theme with its blue and silver hues, reminiscent of the Statue of Liberty and minor references to old-hollywood. Altogether it was a very well thought out look that was both cohesive and on theme.
Emma Chamberlain
Per usual, our favorite relatable youtuber Emma Chamberlain absolutely killed it on the carpet. For her first, and certainly not last, Met she wore a custom gown by Louis Vuitton. Emma has been a known Louis Vuitton ambassador since 2019 so this collaboration was certainly one we all saw coming. The youthful design and simple elegance made this dress easily one of the best on the carpet.
Kendall Jenner
Kendall Jenner was among some of the best dressed celebrities to grace the Met steps. She sported a sheer beige Givenchy gown adorned in expertly placed crystals. Kendall’s dress paid homage to the late Audrey Hepburn in the 1964 film, My Fair Lady, who also wore Givenchy in a majority of her movies. Matthew Williams, the designer, shared that the dress took “2,500 hours and 30 beaders to complete.” While appearing to be light, Kendall’s gown was a lot heavier than conveyed on camera, as the embroidered rhinestones were an extra weight. This look had a unique elegance that not only checked the box of the theme, but also was exceptionally and aesthetically beautiful.
Yara Shahidi
Grownish star and actress Yara Shahidi also came dressed to impress in her stunning Dior gown. Yara’s dress was a nod to black American artist and entertainer Josephine Baker. The Dior showstopper was embroidered from head to toe with a tulle cloak, veil, gloves, and adorned with Cartier jewelry. It is evident how much preparation and thought was put into this ensemble, and it definitely paid off as Shahidi’s look was well received in the fashion community. It was a simple yet classic look that emphasized her maturity and radiated sophistication. Overall, her nod to the contributions of people of color to American fashion, and the ornate nature of her look, made this a top ten outfit of the night.
Timothee Chalamet
Timothee was a co-host of this year’s event and his outfit was definitely one that a lot of people found polarizing. He opted for a more relaxed look, pairing his very classic Haider Ackermann satin tuxedo top with a Cartier brooch, sweatpants, and Converse. Timothy channeled a very quintessential American fashion trend by mixing street style with more refined pieces. Nothing screams American more than sleek and relaxed and Timothy definitely achieved that. While the sweatpants and Converse could be construed as underdressed, it is this exact fashion choice that makes it a successful outfit. It is rare for celebs to show up wearing anything but couture, but Chalamet showed that he can pull off just about anything, even sweatpants at fashion’s most esteemed event.
Pete Davidson
Comedian Pete Davidson made some bold choices with his look this year, opting out of the typical suit in favor of a black Thome Browne dress and white blazer. This was a particularly refreshing take in comparison to the standard tux that other male celebrities sported. Pete’s jewelry also paid tribute to his father, a firefighter who passed on 9/11. Now we are seeing men make bolder fashion choices and Pete is definitely a positive contributor. Fashion is a universal industry and blurring the gender lines for clothing opens up so many doors for others to explore their own identities, which Pete executed flawlessly.
