Have you ever been in a situation where you felt super low and needed a little boost of self confidence but no one was around to provide that confidence? Well, affirmations are a way to just provide it to yourself. Once you begin daily affirmations, you will begin to feel more positive and stop constantly overthinking every little situation. I have come to realize in these past few weeks that in-person college can be pretty stressful. Between my classes, club meetings, and various social activities, I maybe get two to three hours of time for myself each day. Yeah. Two to three hours. Looking in the mirror and simply repeating “I am proud of myself” can go a long way when it simply becomes too much to handle.
I got into daily affirmations this past summer when writing in The Five-Minute Journal. In the journal, there is a section to fill out in the morning and at night. The spot to fill out a daily affirmation is in the morning section. Once I began journaling and doing daily affirmations, my overall mental health and well-being significantly improved. One day this summer I was feeling down about how my body looked. I then wrote in the journal ‘I am in love with myself and my body.’ Even just writing positive affirmations in the journal called for self-reflection and allowed me to realize how much I truly appreciated my own body and all that it has been through.
One of my biggest fears entering sophomore year was stepping out of my comfort zone and having the confidence to be the first one to start a conversation or speak up in a group. However, the amount of confidence I have displayed while talking to new people has been quite surprising. In high school, I was extremely shy and had about three close friends. During the first week, I told myself ‘I believe in the woman I am becoming.’ The college version of me is a completely different person. While I don’t attribute all of my self-improvement to affirmations, I have begun to think more positive thoughts and affirmations have definitely played a role in the improvement.
So, if it worked for me, it may even work for you.
Look in the mirror and try saying this tomorrow morning: “I don’t chase. I attract. What belongs to me will find me.”
