As we approach the halfway point in the semester, many are finding themselves “burnt out” from getting to their classes, completing assignments, studying for exams, and taking part in clubs and other organizations. At times, it can be difficult to see an end in sight. In order to keep yourself motivated and relaxed, it is important to take breaks and pace yourself as much as possible. Below, some simple steps to taking mental breaks amidst a busy schedule are provided. Simply taking a few minutes to regroup is crucial in continuing the semester in a good headspace.
- Get Outside
Many times, we find ourselves in the library for hours on end or staying in our room to study and complete assignments. While these spaces may be great to study or get work done, they are depriving us from the light and fresh air outdoors. Every once in a while when the weather is nice, find a table or space outside to do work, read, or journal. Switching up locations and getting that fresh air and sunshine on your skin will give you a break from the typical four walls you live in.
- Get Active
Similarly to the first point, staying in one confined space for a long period of time is not the best for your mind, but it is not healthy for your body as well. Simply taking a walk with a friend or hitting the gym is a great way to clear your mind and get your body moving. One thing we all do is walk to class, so next time you go to class, unplug from your phone and look around at nature and everything around you.
- Make Time to Socialize
Although we can all get busy with our school work and just want to be alone at the end of the day, this may not always be the best thing to do. Eating dinner with friends or facetiming someone is a great way to interact with others, even when you’re tired and worn out.
It is important that during these times, we are doing all that we can to stay positive and lift others up as well. It is easy to burnout as a college student, but taking time for yourself and others is a great way to see the bigger picture of what you are trying to accomplish and have fun along the way!
