5 Reasons Why You Should Move Out Of Your Hometown After Graduation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GSU chapter.

There comes a time in every young person’s life where after graduation you are deciding whether to stay in your hometown or leave for something new. If you ask me, I think you should always explore new atmospheres and the perfect time would be after college. Here are 5 reasons why you should move out of your hometown after graduation.

1. Fresh start

Whether it’s a new city or a whole new state, moving is guaranteed to give you a fresh start feeling. I know from personal experience staying in your hometown can give you a feeling of being smothered. Moving gives you that chance to make new friends, create a new life, and overall re-brand yourself.

2. bROADEN YOUR HORIZONS

Every state has its slang terms, mannerisms, culture, etc. This is a great way to learn a different culture, learn how to connect to different people, and create memories you could share later in life. You broaden your horizons by opening yourself up to new experiences.

3. BETTER OPPORTUNITIES

Whether you are a creative, freelancer or someone who works a more traditional job, there are always better opportunities somewhere else. If you are someone who lives in a really small town you might really benefit from this. Leaving your hometown for better job prospects will always be the best reason to leave, especially if you have a dream you’re trying to achieve.

4. LEARN FULL INDEPENDENCE

If you decide to move by yourself, you will definitely learn how to be independent. When you know mom and dad are no longer 30 minutes away it forces you to grow up and take responsibility for yourself. You develop your own way of doing things such as your laundry day schedule, house cleaning schedule, grocery shopping methods, etc. You also learn how to manage money (Trust me, this is a skill everyone needs to learn).

5. LEARN WHO YOU TRULY ARE

As I said before, moving can mature you faster than anything else. This is a great time to learn who you are. You have the space to explore your likes and dislikes, your decoration style, your favorite restaurants, and more. You can fully come into your own without worrying about what people think. Think of it as blooming from your cocoon.

It might seem scary at first to take that risk but trust me you will never regret it. Even if it doesn’t work out, you can at least say I lived on my own for a couple of months. Life is about learning, so enjoy the ride.
