Heading home for winter break and need some music when you need to get away from family, friends, and hometown drama? Here are your new (no, not your 2021 Spotify Wrapped) favorite songs that will no doubt get you through winter break and possibly even brighten your mood. These are some of my absolute favorite songs at the moment (and no, most are not all winter or Christmas songs). Here’s the playlist so you can listen along.
- “All I Want for Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey
Okay, I know this is a classic, but what’s a winter playlist if this is not included in it? Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, it’s honestly just such a winter staple that will put even the meanest grinch in the winter spirit. Also, let’s talk about how this song has been hitting the top charts ever since the 90s, you go Ms. Carey.
2. “She Is Love” by Oasis
If you’re a fan of the classic “Wonderwall,” Oasis has another song that I love. I included this song because, honestly, it just makes me incredibly happy. This song will have you driving around your hometown and thinking about how you are the main character, and you’re in your own little world. If this song doesn’t put a smile on your face, I don’t know what will.
3. “Soulmate” by Mac Miller
Alright, this song has nothing to do with winter break, but I felt as if it is my duty to have people listen to this song because of how beautiful it is. It gets me in my feels but in a way that makes me want to wrap my arms around someone, I love. Also, it could be a good song for when you see that sneaky link at home… I don’t know, just a thought.
4. “Bad Behavior” by Austin Millz (feat. Remi Wolf)
If you’re anything like me, you love Remi Wolf. Her voice is the most gorgeous thing ever and honestly this song just makes me want to dance around in my kitchen at midnight.
5. “It’s Called: Freefall” by Rainbow Kitten Surprise
If you truly listen to the lyrics of this song, you might get a little sad, but as a huge fan of Rainbow Kitten Surprise, it’s a literal masterpiece. It has a lot to do with self-reflection and battling one’s inner demons. I like this song when you want to feel angst or melancholy driving around your hometown wishing you were back at college.Â
6. “Blue Monday” by New Order
If you don’t listen to one single song on this list, I need you to listen to this one right now. You might be starting to listen to it, and being like “Huh?” but just wait. The 80s vibes and synth in this song make me feel like the main character every single time without fail. It’s a long song but more to enjoy. It makes me feel like I’m in one of those old-school rat pack movies.
7. “Dark Necessities” by Red Hot Chili Peppers
I love this song. Not just because of Flea’s amazing bass strumming at the beginning that starts the song perfectly but also because it’s a great song to honestly listen to while doing just about anything. I find myself singing the chorus at the most random times because it’s that good. If you want to get more into the Chili Peppers, I would definitely recommend this one.
8. “waves – Tame Impala Remix” by Miguel (feat. Tame Impala)
Talk about musical genius. This song has not only Miguel but also Tame Impala, and it makes me feel so at peace because Miguel’s voice is so smooth. I love the original, but the remix of this song adds so much depth that makes this song feel both fun and sultry. Also, not to mention that the cover art is gorgeous and very unique.
9. “West Coast Love” by Emotional Oranges
This is an eclectic song, but I think the lead singer has such a soothing voice, and the beat just adds so much fun but also mature vibes to it. It tells a fun story of young love on the west coast (hence the name). The cover art on this song is also very cute as well.
10. “Floors” by Abhi The Nomad (feat. Foster Cazz)
Okay, I don’t want to say that I saved the best for last… but did I? The world may never know. But in all honesty, this song reminds me of some of the most fun times I’ve had, and the beat makes me feel giddy and happy. It has strumming that makes me instantly want to sing along.
I hope that you enjoyed some of these songs that you will (hopefully) fall into love with over winter break. I hope that you have a wonderful winter break and have a great time celebrating the holidays with your loved ones. Here’s to a great 2022!
