As we all know, ever since the pandemic hit in 2020, everything seems relentlessly tiring. We’re all drained. From the endless amount of Zoom calls, new Covid strains and outbreaks, friends and family members getting sick every month- it seems like we all need a break.

That’s why I can’t get enough of going to the movie theater because it’s a total escape for me. I’m able to live in a whole different world for two or more hours, and not worry about what’s happening outside the screen. All I have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

I think it’s why I also look forward to new releases coming out, as there are new stories to invest in with sequels to anticipate, new characters to meet, different plot lines to dissect and, of course, a reason to run off to the theaters.

With that in mind, here are my totally biased but diverse top three movies that I’m most looking forward to seeing this year that I hope you’ll be buying tickets to as well.

THE BATMAN

Two words. Robert. Pattinson. Done! I’m literally sold. I will see anything that this man is in, and now he’s playing one of the most iconic DC superheroes of all time in a supposedly darker take on Batman? Take my money!

I know I’m not the only one looking forward to this film, and would probably have to count it as the most anticipated movie of 2022! Let’s hope it lives up to the hype, or I know there will be some intense backlash.

LEGALLY BLONDE 3

Ohmigod, ohmigod you guys! Legally Blonde THREE? You have to be kidding me- not only do I love Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Coolidge, but I love this entire franchise from the bottom of my heart. Though my little girl dreams of wearing a pink pantsuit in court never came to fruition, I still feel empowered by the representation of the struggles that come with being a woman excelling in a male-dominated workplace. Though there are not many details on what the story is going to look like at the moment, I have high hopes that it will deliver and leave no crumbs.

There’s currently no trailer or release date, but the movie is expected to drop in May of this year.

LIGHTYEAR

A Buzz Lightyear origin story? This is exactly what 2022 needed.

I think this was a smart way to continue the Toy Story franchise because not only does it make kids of this generation that haven’t seen the originals get invested in the “fandom,” but it also allows for adults who grew up with the movies to continue the fun and reminisce on their childhood at the theaters. The trailer also looks incredible, with Pixar once again delivering unbeatable and impeccable animation, making me super stoked to give this one a watch.

Though these are the films that made my top three list for this year, there are many honorable mentions that I’m also excited to check out:

  • Uncharted directed by Ruben Fleischer (Release Date: February 18th)
  • Turning Red directed by Domee Shi (Release Date: March 11th)
  • Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness directed by Sam Raimi (Release Date: May 6th)
  • The Bob’s Burgers Movie directed by Loren Bouchard (Release Date: May 27th)
  • Thor: Love and Thunder directed by Taika Waititi (Release Date: July 8th)

If there’s anything that can help the general collective get through the second year of the pandemic, it’s definitely Batman, Jennifer Coolidge and Buzz Lightyear. I hope this list gets you excited for some new flicks coming out this year and allows you to have something to look forward to getting you through 2022.
