Living the Suite Life: My Experience with Living in a Hotel in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

“Here I am in your life, here you are in mine” has been echoing in my head for the first few weeks of this semester. My roommates and I experienced a bit of a tragedy in our housing situation due to pipes bursting. So, I have been living in a hotel while my housing situation gets sorted out. It’s not quite like Zack and Cody’s experience, but there are definitely some pros and cons that have made this whole fiasco very memorable.

Pros:

Contiental Breakfast

Breakfast is my favorite meal, so a continental breakfast is the easiest way to my heart. Waffles, an array of cereals, croissants, and eggs all displayed perfectly for my taking each morning was quite a luxury. I always think that breakfast tastes better when you don’t have to make it yourself, plus it was very reminiscent of the dining hall experience of my early college years.

Housekeeping

Fresh towels, pristinely made beds, and clean surfaces upon request does sound a bit like living like a princess and I can’t complain. A clean environment always boosts my mood and was helpful during that stressful time because it makes me feel much more organized.

Pool & Gym

Not that I utilized these amenities to their full potential, but the option was definitely appreciated. Part of me is a bit disappointed I didn’t go swimming because this winter weather has me nostalgic for the summertime heat.

Cons:

No Full kitchen

Trying to cook a regular dinner has been a tad challenging because of the lack of kitchen utensils and cookware, so there has been a lot of take-out or going out to dinner over these past few weeks. As delicious and easy as it is, my bank account is suffering ever-so-slightly.

Not being all together with my roommates

This aspect has been the hardest part. I love my roommates so much and we’re all best friends, so being in different rooms feels unordinary and secluded. We haven’t been able to spontaneously watch a movie or sing karaoke as we get ready like we used to because now we’re floors apart and all feeling overwhelmed.

Doesn’t feel home-y

As clean and sleek as the hotel rooms were, it never felt like a home (I mean obviously it was a hotel). I couldn’t quite settle in and get super comfortable because the space didn’t feel like mine.

No Mr.Moseby

This may be the most disappointing part of all (kidding), because I just know his sarcasm would have improved my morale about the situation. All jokes aside, my roommates and I did befriend one of the staff members who was lovely, and believe it or not, his name was Zack!

Living the “Suite Life” for the start of the semester was not ideal, but I tried to channel Zack and Cody’s lifestyle to fully enjoy the perks that the hotel offered. When I did feel anxious and overwhelmed, I reminded myself that all the negatives were only temporary. I have grown from this hectic situation to be more resilient and adaptable. Also, a home is what you make of it with the people around you!
