10 Valentine’s Week Date Ideas for the Five Love Languages

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Everyone gives and receives love differently. Whether your partner prefers to shower you with compliments or take your hand in theirs while walking, the love is universal. The love languages classify these preferences and more into five categories of experiencing and expressing love. They are receiving gifts, acts of service, quality time, words of affirmation and physical touch.

These love languages help to communicate a person’s needs and desires within relationships. This Valentine’s Day, to make your loved one feel special, you should learn to satisfy their love language. Below are a few charming love language date ideas that will both improve this love season for you and your partner and also your relationship moving forward.

Receiving gifts

If your partner’s love language is receiving gifts, it does not mean that the only way to make them happy is by spoiling them with expensive gifts. An ideal date for your partner is one in which they can turn the memories of the date into something tangible.

A pottery painting date is a great romantic activity to do with a partner whose love language is receiving gifts. While painting pottery, you get to spend relaxing alone time with your date and create a one-of-a-kind homemade piece of art. To make it special, you can each make a sentimental piece of pottery for the other that you both can cherish forever.

A shopping scavenger hunt date is another thoughtful idea for someone whose love language is receiving gifts. On this date, you can challenge your partner to see who knows the other best. To play this game, create different shopping prompts and then run through the aisles of a store to find items that fit that prompt. For example, if the prompt is “favorite color,” run through the aisles of a Target in search of an item that fits the other person’s favorite color. You can have as many prompts as you’d like, but make sure not to show the other person what you bought for them until you leave the store. This date is fun and affectionate, getting you both active while proving to your partner how well you know them.

acts of service

If your partner’s love language is acts of service, then their preferred way of receiving love is by having you do something kind for them without them having to ask. Most times, these partners express their love in this way by cooking your meals, doing your laundry or giving you rides. An ideal date for this person is one where they can relax and be taken care of.

Cooking or baking for your partner is the perfect date idea for someone whose love language is acts of service. Whether your partner chooses to help you in the kitchen or not, planning this date for them shows that you appreciate what they do for you and want to return the love. This date should end with the two of you sharing a homemade meal or tasty treat and enjoying one another’s company.

A self-care night is another great date in which you can display your appreciation for your acts of service partner. This can be in the form of a relaxing spa night, including massages, face masks and baths. You can even do your partner’s favorite activities with them, like munching on their favorite snacks while playing their favorite video game together. Either way, ensure that the night revolves around them and their needs.

Quality time

If your partner’s love language is quality time, they most cherish the moments that they can spend alone with you. Any date that you take this partner on should make them feel loved, as long as the focus is on you two and there are no distractions. This makes coming up with dates to please those with this love language relatively easy.

One date idea for the quality time enthusiast is a picnic. Planning a picnic date for your partner can involve their favorite foods, drinks, music and scenery. Take your partner to a secluded spot, watch the clouds and talk about life for a while. Your presence alone is enough to satisfy and comfort them. Go from cloud watching to stargazing and cuddle up with each other at the end of the night.

A more active date idea for your quality time partner is exploring a new area. The destination does not matter, so long as you and your partner are along for the ride together. Pick an adventurous mode of transportation and look for cute shops, cafes, museums and more. This date can also lead to future date ideas and locations.

words of affirmation

If your partner’s love language is words of affirmation, then they feel most loved when they’re explicitly told that they are loved. Although most dates do not revolve around sharing your feelings for a partner, some unique dates can incorporate this.

Making playlists will leave any person whose love language is words of affirmation feeling appreciated and loved. For this date, sit down in a comfortable place with your partner and create a collaborative playlist with them. Both people should add songs that remind the other of them and express how they feel about them. When you are both done adding songs, you can listen to the playlist in full and sing and dance along to the beautiful lyrics that reminded you both of one another. The memories and playlist made on this date will be cherished forever.

A clever and unique place to take a partner who has a soft spot for words is to a bookstore. Enjoying a good read with your partner at a local bookstore is both sweet and sentimental. You can show one another your favorite books and point out quotes that reflect your relationship. This intimate date will bring you closer to one another.

physical touch

If your partner’s love language is physical touch, then they receive love through physical intimacy like hugs, kisses and handholding. Dates with a partner who receives love through physical touch should always involve closeness with one another at some point. Luckily, touch can be incorporated into most dates.

One date that centers around being physically close to one another is a drive-in movie theater date. This date is perfect for those with this love language because it involves going out in public while keeping a level of privacy. At the drive-in, you typically park in front of the big screen, lay down in the trunk of your car and cuddle up to your partner. This date feels nostalgic and retro, making it unforgettable.

Building a bonfire is yet another cozy date, especially in the cold month of February. Feeling the heat of the fire and body heat of your partner would feel comforting and safe to anyone, but especially to someone whose love language is physical touch. Add some campfire tunes, good conversation and marshmallows to make this date one to remember.

Happy love season!
