If you’re someone who really enjoys art, music, theatre, etc., but you gave it up in favor
of a major or career path that is more “practical”. I’m gonna offer you some advice. Keep art in
your life. I’m not saying to drop everything and change your major, but I am saying find a way
(no matter how small) to keep creating. For me, art has always been a crucial part of my life.
Personally, I chose two creative majors because I never really saw myself as someone who works
a 9-5 office job and I like hands-on projects. During quarantine in 2020, I started painting again.
I did it in high school, so it had been a while, but I finally broke out an art kit I had received for
Christmas several years ago and started painting. It was honestly so therapeutic and it gave me
light at the end of a tunnel. Here are some ways you can stay creative:
- Paint: Now even if you don’t have an art kit lying around, you could easily buy a
paint-by-number kit, or you can head to Michael’s and grab some canvases and paint.
You don’t have to be a professional, but honestly, it’s so much fun - Color: adult coloring books have been super popular over the last few years, and for good
reason. They’re so calming and there’s plenty of books to choose from, so you can easily
head down to any bookstore and pick some up. - Dance: While I am not the strongest dancer, dance became a bigger part of my life when I
started taking dance for my major. Over winter break, I took a couple classes at a dance
school because I didn’t want to lose what I’d already learned. I also am currently taking a
hip hop class in order to keep dancing throughout the year. I find dancing to be an
excellent outlet for self-expression and relieving stress as well. 10/10 would recommend. - TikTok: One thing I love about TikTok is how creative I see people get with their content.
I make videos for fun, I’m not necessarily looking to be an influencer, but I enjoy coming
up with ideas for content and seeing what other people come up with. - Writing: Sometimes when I’m bored, I write poetry or even journal entries for fun. It’s a
great way to get your thoughts out if you have a lot on your mind. I’ve been keeping a
journal for the longest time. When I don’t know what to write about or don’t have much
to recap about my life, I just write about what’s on my mind or what my goals are.
Creativity is so much more important than it’s given credit for. Even if your career doesn’t allow
much room for creativity, give yourself a creative outlet so you can express yourself. I guarantee
you won’t regret it. Good luck and happy creating!
