5 (More) Podcasts that Itch My Brain Just Right

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSC chapter.

In my last installment of “5 Podcasts That Itch My Brain Just Right,” I sat down with the intention of naming closer to ten of my favorite Podcasts. I quickly realized, however, I have too much to say about these slices of heaven that are constantly playing in the background of my life. Now before I get into this, I should mention that the shows I previously talked about aren’t in any way superior to the ones I’m about to dive into. I simply had to break up the list a little for both my sake and yours. So, once again, without further ado, and in no particular order, here are five more Podcasts that itch my brain just right:

The Bald and the Beautiful

This one is near and dear to my heart, as it’s hosted by my biological mothers, Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamolodchikova, who also happen to be some of the most successful drag queens to ever come out of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Fans of Trixie and Katya, like myself, will never be satisfied with the amount of content these two put out. I’ll admit I’ve watched every single episode of their YouTube show, Unhhh…, at least twice. Trust me when I say, you will never find a pair with as much chemistry and perfect comedic timing. I am literally begging you to listen.

Jensen and Holes: The Murder Squad

If you know anything about true crime, you’ve probably heard of the “Golden State Killer,” who was very recently found out to be Joseph Deangelo. The man to thank is lead investigator Paul Holes. Partnered with the journalist that covered it all, Billy Jensen, the duo bring cold cases to light each week, telling victims’ stories, providing context for what evidence we do have, and calling upon the listeners to help find what we don’t. Through this show, unnamed women in photos in the possession of serial killers have been identified all because listeners decided to ask friends and family who lived in the area at the time if they recognized the women. The show highlights true citizen detective work as a viable way for cold cases to come to light and eventually be solved.

Radio Rental

This one is obscure, and I’m obsessed. Hosted by Rainn Wilson’s stage-alter-ego, Terry Carnation, Radio Rental tells two stories each episode that are… spooky. These stories range from unexplainable to downright terrifying. To kinda give you the tone of the show, one of my favorite stories has been about the guy whose girlfriend randomly stormed into his apartment, trashed it, and hopped into a cab with all of her things… only for the real her to come home 30 seconds later, confused as to why her apartment was trashed. Almost every episode is one of those that makes you go, “woah… that’s crazy,” and I think everyone needs a little more of that in their lives.

Psychobabble

I have a confession: I am still consuming Tyler Oakley’s content. This show is one of my comfort Podcasts, hosted by him and his bestie Korey Kuhl. Psychobabble, in essence, is a gossip-session. And my toxic trait is absolutely loving gossip. Each episode covers a variety of topics: Animal Crossing, Drag Race, and the de-bimbo-ification of the green M&M. You want it? They cover it. Bonus: fan of the Amazing Race? They’ve competed twice!

No Gorge

Another Podcast hosted by some of RuPaul’s greatest prodigies, Gottmik and Violet Chachki have only recently started consistently producing the show. Neither girl is a comedy queen, but you would never guess listening to No Gorge. Also available with visuals on YouTube, Gottmik and Violet tell stories of their gnarly nights out, toot and boot that week’s looks on Drag Race, and give a great insight to drag outside of the show. A newby, but a goodie; I’m gonna toot this show.
