We’ve all been there. The dreaded times of the year where you take the clothes you love to wear and say an emotional “goodbye” until the next fashion season rolls around. Now I get it. I do this every year too, and as college students, I think we can all agree we have a lot of clothes. It’s so hard not to; who doesn’t love a little bit of therapeutic shopping? However, with this being my freshman year of college, and living in a glorified shoebox, I’ve had to learn how to make do with a closet that is just not fit for any self-proclaimed material girl. I think we can all agree no matter what year of college we’re in, we’re probably not getting that big luxurious closet of our dreams.
This year I decided I’ve had enough of spending money on clothes I love just for them to be out of style once that next season rolls around. So, after some time, a good closet cleanout, and a few (okay, maybe more than a few) trips to the mall, I curated myself a seasonless wardrobe, and let me tell you, it’s been the best decision of my 2022, and it will be yours too.
So, you’re probably wondering, what is a seasonless wardrobe?
A seasonless wardrobe is one that includes clothes that are easily transferable from season to season. Think of a capsule wardrobe but much more versatile and customizable. It allows you to be able to mix and match your clothing in an endless amount of ways. Through my journey building a seasonless wardrobe, I have discovered my own personal style, and I can’t remember the last time I wore an outfit twice. Sounds great right? Here’s how to do it.
- Clean out that closet
-
The best first step is by doing a deep clean of the clothes you don’t need. Look through your clothes and accessories and decide what you wear the most, what you have never worn, and what you don’t need anymore. Then, take those clothes and donate or sell them. Plus, recycling old clothes is the best way to help stop fast fashion!
- wear whatever colors make you happy
-
Instead of dressing in colors designated for a certain season, start by buying clothes in your favorite colors. Wearing colors that you love is scientifically proven to boost your mood. And if you haven’t heard, dopamine dressing is the new trend for 2022, so what better time to start than now?
Color doesn’t have to match certain seasons. I love color. I’m not a huge fan of wearing all neutrals, and you’ll never see me in an outfit without a touch of pink in it. So, when creating my wardrobe, I chose a color palette that works for me. The colors I mostly wear are light and hot pink, brown, white, black, and purples. I also have some pieces in other colors to make my wardrobe more versatile. But as long the color palette is consistent with the majority of your wardrobe, you can find pieces in any color for any season!
- layers, layers, layers
-
Layering your clothes is the core of a seasonless wardrobe. The way a seasonless wardrobe works is by wearing most of your clothes at any time of the year.
For example, A warm-weather outfit could be a miniskirt, a tee-shirt/tank top, and a pair of sneakers. Switch this look to a cold-weather outfit by keeping those pieces the same but adding tights under the skirt, a turtleneck under the shirt, adding an extra coat, and if needed, switching sneakers out for boots.
- sticking with the basics to follow more trends
-
Yes, you heard that right. By sticking to basic/timeless pieces that you know will be in style for years, you are actually allowing yourself to have the opportunity to try new trends. If you already have all of your necessary pieces, then getting clothes for the trends will just be able to enhance your wardrobe, rather than being a piece you rely on as a staple for your wardrobe. That way you can still partake in the fun trends, while not having to switch out most of your closet every time a new trend emerges.
While shopping for basics I would invest in a good pair of jeans, a little black dress, a trench/leather coat, neutral miniskirts, turtlenecks, and tank tops/tee-shirts in all the colors in your color palette.
