I’m not entirely sure what my skin type is. Ever since coming to Japan, “combination” seems like the best fit due to it venturing into the extremes of oily and dry whenever summer and winter roll around. I’m usually pretty good at switching out my products to make sure I’m not applying excessive moisture during the humid summer months, but I’ve never put much effort into finding new products for winter.

This year I decided that I’d had enough of dealing with the struggle that is applying makeup on dehydrated skin and began the process of testing different products until I found a routine that effectively kept my face hydrated. Here are the products that saved my skin this winter.

  1. Weleda Skin Food Moisturizer

This is a product that has been on my “To Try” list since high school but I somehow never got around to actually purchasing it until this year. And now that I have, there’s no going back. I initially had some concerns that it would be too heavy considering it’s a product that can be used on both the face and body, but it ended up providing the perfect amount of moisture. I definitely will not be using this product during the summer but for winter, it’s the only moisturizer that has successfully prevented my skin from feeling tight and dry during the day without feeling oily on the skin.

2. Sana Tounyu Inhurabon Moisturizing Face Wash

I’ve been using the toner from this line for years and decided to give their face wash a try after reading the positive reviews on @Cosme. I have nothing to say except that it lives up to its expectations. My summer face wash does an excellent job of stripping the oils from my face but this was the last thing I wanted in winter. This face wash applies with a very creamy consistency and leaves my skin feeling clean without drying it out. It’s available at virtually any drugstore and I definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for a face wash that provides a little extra moisture before going into the rest of your skincare routine.

3. Face Oil

When it comes to face oil I’ve never found a particular brand to provide noticeably different results. However, I personally prefer products that include olive oil as it has the added benefit of providing antibacterial and antioxidant properties to your skin. I don’t use face oils during the day as it has the tendency to make my makeup slide off my skin, but I have noticed a huge difference in my skins hydration since I started using it at night.
