5 Reasons to Be a Blair, Not a Serena

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rollins chapter.

Gossip Girl (2007) was a show that took the world by storm. The show told the story of the lives of privileged teenagers on the upper east side in NYC. The two main characters are Blair Waldorf and Serena Van Der Woodsen.  Don’t get me wrong, both girls have their faults- after seeing them in this show you can’t deny that fact. Not to pin one against the other, but there were many times where Blair appeared to be on top- let’s take a closer look at why.

Self-Confidence

Blair’s confidence is something we can all admire. She says in one episode, “I’m not a stop along the way, I’m a destination.” Another famous Blair quote that hits home for teenagers and adults alike is: ”I don’t need a boyfriend to be fulfilled”. I don’t know about you, but when I was younger I definitely used to think I needed to have someone else by my side to have a full and complete life. As I’ve come to realize, that’s just not it. You see that Blair knows that, which is a great thing to note.

Blair and Friendship

Blair has definitely had her ups and downs. We see that throughout the whole show, but something Blair never does is give up on her friends- whether that be Nate, Serena, or even Chuck. If it weren’t for Blair on the many occasions where Serena was highly intoxicated, who knows what would’ve happened. She teaches us through her acts that friendship is everything- especially coming from someone who is an only child.

Blair and Relationships

Throughout the show there has been a lot of back and forth between the men. Not as much as Serena, but enough to show that Blair has had her fair share of relationships. Something we can take from Blair is specific to one of her quotes: “we can’t let the men of our past define us”. Through all of her relationships, she has been very serious in the fact that she is an independent young woman who values herself more than being with a man. Her main romantic interest, Chuck Bass, was always so emotionally closed off but with Blair he was able to break his walls and actually be with her. The way she values her relationships is something we can all take with us.

Fashion Style

If you have seen Gossip Girl you definitely know what I’m talking about when I say that Blair knows fashion. In one episode, she’s the one who clarifies that tights are not considered pants and she has to explain that to basically the whole school. She wore the beautiful red gown that made Chuck Bass look at her and fall back in love immediately. She had her wedding dress designed by Vera Wang, which in itself is honestly kind of amazing. So if you’re going to take anything from this list, you should definitely take the way that Blair knows fashion.

Facing Problems

There have definitely been times on the show where Blair would rather run away or hide instead of facing her problems, but there were also a lot of times where she had the chance to run and she decided to face her problems head on. She felt like her entire reputation was completely gone and was ready to just run away and do a semester of school somewhere else. She got her mother to agree to it but at the last minute decided to stay and face her troubles. I know that if I had the choice I would run because I don’t know how to take on my own problems, especially in high school. The fact that she could do this proves a good point of why you should be Blair not Serena.
