All You Need to Know Before Moving Out

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lynn chapter.

Welcome to your next chapter.

It is approaching the time when college kids are the most stressed out they have ever been. It is nearing the end of the spring semester which only means one thing: moving out season. On top of moving out most students are also looking for a new place to move into. With the pressure of facing graduation, looking for a job or internship, and searching for your next dream place, it can be difficult to know what to look for in a new place. Do not stress, this guide will make you very confident in yourself as you prepare to move out and find somewhere else to live.

The first step you are taking when you decide to move out after giving your 60 days notice is probably to freak out about the amount of things you have to move. You will not freak out if you are prepared so do not wait until the last minute when it comes to moving out. Be proactive by going through your closet and throwing things out that you do not usually wear often or donate your clothes to Goodwill. Another thing not to do at the last minute would be going to the grocery store. Stop and look at your pantry. If there are things you can eat before they go bad, eat it. Try and make sure that you will have to bring as little as possible to your next place to live when it comes to food. Toiletries apply the same as food. Make sure you use as much shampoo, conditioner, or things you are almost out of so you do not need to keep buying more things you will eventually have to move in a few months. Taking as little as possible seems to be an advantage and it is. Trying to ensure that everything will fit in your car or taking as few trips as possible to your new place should be the goal if you are choosing to move out without the help of movers.

A great start to help you not stress out more than you already are would be to hire movers. Some moving companies are there to help college students like the company College H.U.N.K.S. They will make your transition completely easy. However if you are moving out by yourself or having movers it is important you learn how to pack your things up the right way.

First you will need some boxes, instead of going out and buying boxes or if you do not have your old boxes with which you moved in with there is a helpful way to find boxes. If you go to a liquor store, small grocery store, or a big chain company many of them have extra boxes in the back that they are waiting to get rid of. When you are getting boxes make sure to not put heavy things in the big boxes because as it starts to get heavy you will only make it more difficult to move out. Make sure to put things like pillows, towels and bulky things in boxes. You also may find it useful to use trash bags or your hamper so put your pillows or comforter in as well.

Now that we have talked about how to move out and how to do it properly it is important to remember some things when finding a new place to live. After you find out what area you would like to live in, how many bedrooms and bathrooms, and your price range, there are still more things to consider. Zillow can be a useful place to find houses and apartments to buy or rent. It gives you so many options and can make it  very easy to schedule tours of new places to live. Zillow can be your best friend, but watch out. If you are looking to buy a new place to live in it is important to read the fine print. Some things to watch out for would be HOA prices, if there is a membership fee and any other hidden fees. It is also important to know what your HOA fee covers, for example it would be lawn care, trash, pool or gym maintenance. You want that fee to cover as much as possible for as reasonable as possible. It is also important for pet owners to make sure you see if that place allows pets at all.

You should not be stressed about moving out. Everyone will eventually have to move at one point in their life and it should be an exciting thing as it is a new chapter in your life. After reading you may think about things you have not thought about when you have been moving or thought about moving. It is important to consider all the details that go into moving out of a place. Although we have only just begun to discuss some of the smaller things, thinking about moving is a big deal. Remember to not stress yourself out about it and welcome to the next chapter.
