Be it to enjoy with your family, friends or even by yourself, who doesn’t want to be involved with a dramatic story tainted with music and dance? After the pandemic break, the musicals are finally coming back at full speed in São Paulo! The city offers a large number of musical lovers ready to fill out all the seats in every performance during this season (e.g. the case of the #1 of our list!)

#1: SWEENEY TOOD

The acclaimed musical written by Stephen Sondheim tells Benjamin Barker’s story, a barber who was forced to leave his town after getting in trouble with Judge Turpin. After 15 years, Benjamin comes back under the pseudonym Sweeney and along with Dona Lovett, the new owner of the store he used to run, he tries to get his revenge. The Brazil version on the musical is starred by Rodrigo Lombardi and Andrezza Massei, and is being produced by Del Claro Produções and Firma de Teatro

#2: 13 – O MUSICAL 

One of the most refreshing Broadway musicals follows Evan Goldman’s life, a typical 13 year-old teenager, who moves to New York City and faces the typical problems of this stage in life, including the divorce of his parents and the insecurity of starting a new life in a different place.

#3: DONNA SUMMER MUSICAL

Donna Summer, one of the biggest divas of pop culture in the U.S., finally is having her story told in Donna Summer Musical. The show tells the trajectory of this famous singer through Miguel Falabella’s eyes and interpretation of Karin Hills, Jeniffer Nascimento and Amanda Souza

When? 08.04 to 19.06

#4: UMA NOITE NA BROADWAY

In celebration of the 20 year anniversary of musical theater in Brazil, Uma Noite Na Broadway depicts the life of 2 young actors in search of fame in New York City. The fun comedy refers to big musicals like West Side Story, Mamma Mia!, Wicked, Fiddler on the Roof, Les Miserables, The Little Mermaid, Rent, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, The Phantom of the Opera and Grease.

#5: MORTE E VIDA SEVERINA

João Cabral Neto’s musical talks about the life and arid trajectory of the people of the northeastern outback, still unknown to most brazilians. Severino‘s story is a portrait of migrants who seek a more dignified existence in large cities, as well as the difficulties they face in that pursuit.

#6: WEST SIDE STORY

One of the biggest Broadway musicals (inspired by Romeo and Juliet!) comes to Brazil in July, bringing the story about two rival gangs: the Jets and the Sharks. Tony, one of the Jets leaders, falls in love with Maria, whose brother is an avid Shark. Just like that, A seemingly impossible love story is born. 

When? 08.07 to 07.08

#7: ANYTHING GOES

From the same creators of Charlie! and School of Rock, Anything Goes! is the next project of Atelier de Cultura, still in the rehearsal stage. In a ship, Billie Crocker, a clandestine passenger, falls in love with Lord Evelyn’s wife, Hope. With a little bit of his friend’s help, Billie tries to conquer her heart.
