Avery Lowry is a sophomore at Indiana University studying Journalism and American Studies with a minor in History. She is from Noblesville, Indiana, where she discovered her passion for journalistic writing through her high school’s newspaper. With a particular attraction to investigative journalism, Avery seeks out stories that explore complex and systematic issues.
Avery is especially interested in fleshing out stories that align with her political interests in intersectional feminism, LGBTQ+ rights, and institutional racism. She believes that one of the most powerful tools is the written word — that it has the ability to change the world as we know it.
In her second year at IU, Avery is hoping to expand her horizons and familiarize herself with the camera as she further explores photojournalism. She is interested in archiving and preserving images that tell generations of the future about the world in which we inhabit today.
Always a lover of stories, Avery loves to curl up with a good book in her free time. When she’s not reading, you can find her with her friends, writing, listening to music, or engrossed in a video essay. In the future, Avery hopes to contextualize her writing as an investigative journalist with her learnings from the American Studies and History department at IU.
