Hi there! My name is Katy, and I am a first year studying sociology at Bristol!
I have been living in Bristol for only a short time but already have fallen in love with the people, places and passions that exist within the area. Being from a smaller village in Essex to now meet such a mix of people with their own interests and personalities is something that has really stuck out to me and made me feel extremely welcome.
Studying sociology has opened my mind to the problems that still exist within society today, and although progressions have been made, in particular through the emergence of youth culture in the post-war period, 'we' as a collective are the catalyst for change. For example, feminism has taken many forms through the early nineteenth century, but although the importance of first wave feminism cannot be misinterpreted as unimportant, it became the classic example of unconscious bias towards the upper-class white women, which can be argued to have slowed down the movement towards the equality within society as a whole. Sociology is the subject that I chose to study because it is the intersection between politics, economics and social policy, which helps to create a well-rounded perspective of the inequalities and ideologies that exist within society today.
Aside from my subject, I love to go on walks around the city, especially as there's so much to explore here! I also enjoy yoga, which helps to de-stress after what can sometimes be an overwhelming day at university - as well as baking, going out for coffee or catching up with friends and family! I am so excited to write as a part of Her Campus, and I feel honoured to be surrounded by inspirational and talented people!
