Marissa Meilleur is an Ottawa-based writer for the Carleton University chapter of Her Campus. Interests in entertainment, politics, news, as well as social justice, guide her writing, but certainly do not limit it – Marissa is always open to new ideas and writing styles. As a first-year student pursuing a Combined Honours in Journalism and Political Science, Marissa is keen on expanding her writing portfolio to cover a wide range of topics.
Marissa’s passion for writing emerged from a young age, where she could usually be found surpassing word limits on school assignments or jotting down her latest story ideas. Her first publication came in her grandmother’s residential school memoir, "Finding Our Faces", where Marissa contributed a written speech at the age of 10. This early publication that now appears in the Yukon curriculum, as well as her Tlingit First Nation roots, helped to inspire Marissa’s aspirations of seeking social change through journalism. Throughout high school, Marissa received several awards for leadership and academic achievement alike, including the English Award in both Grade 11 and 12.
Outside of writing, Marissa is a First Year Representative for Carleton's Journalism Society, and works as a lifeguard and aquatic instructor. Additionally, she holds a black belt in Taekwon-Do, a martial art she has participated in since the age of five. In her free time, she can often be found watching an Ottawa Senators game, re-reading Harry Potter, or listening to some of her favourite artists, including Arctic Monkeys and Taylor Swift.
