3 Nonprofit Fellowships You Can Apply for Now

If you’ve ever considered a career in the nonprofit world—or just want to use your degree and skills for good—why not check out a fellowship program? Well-known programs like Teach for America and the Peace Corps are fantastic, but there are also great options that require a shorter time commitment (between four months and a year). Here are three you can apply for now.

1. 6-Month Field Internship: GlobalGiving
West Africa

GlobalGiving connects organizations from all over the world with donors who can support their work. The organization’s goal is to make a difference in education, health, women’s empowerment, microfinance, environmental sustainability, and more!

GlobalGiving is looking for a passionate, motivated, and enthusiastic individual to travel throughout West Africa for at least six months in Fall 2013 and Spring 2014. You’ll visit development projects, evaluate the work of partner organizations, and conduct outreach to future partners. You’ll gain valuable in-the-field experience while having the adventure of a lifetime!

You Should Have: Job or internship experience in international development, nonprofit management, or marketing; travel experience; and flexibility to changing circumstances (because things are bound to go differently than expected in the field!).

2. Fellow: Kiva
More Than 60 Locations Around the Globe

Prestigious microfinance organization Kiva offers one of the coolest fellowship programs out there! As a Kiva Fellow, you’ll act as Kiva’s eyes and ears on the ground in developing countries, helping local communities make the most of the Kiva’s loans.

Whether your role is marketing, consulting, or capacity building, you’ll get firsthand nonprofit and microfinance experience and have the opportunity to increase the impact of an organization that’s doing amazing things.

You Should Be: Humble and adaptable! Kiva takes fellows from all backgrounds, so what the organization is really looking for is passionate, talented people who strive to make the most of every situation.

3. Global Fellow: Heartland Alliance
Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East

Heartland Alliance is the leading anti-poverty organization in the Midwest, but its International Programs take that mission abroad! As a Global Fellow, you’ll spend six months to a year in the field gaining knowledge and experience in human services and human rights. Whether you choose a research fellowship or a clinical experience in the field of public health, you’ll help boost your career as a human rights leader—and change the world at the same time.

You Should Have: Requirements depend on the type of fellowship; some fellowships require you to be enrolled in grad school.
