10 TV Shows You Don’t Watch (But Should Start Watching!)

Most of us have watched Gossip Girl since high school and can’t miss an episode of Glee, but if you’re getting bored of your go-to shows, check out this list to find your latest fix!

1. Portlandia, IFC, Fridays at 10 p.m. EST.

If you’re into sketch comedy, you’ll love Portlandia, regardless of your opinions about hipsters. Saturday Night Live’s Fred Armisen costars with Carrie Brownstein as a variety of recurring characters navigating the hipster scene in Portland, Oregon. Guest stars like Jason Sudeikis and Aubrey Plaza round out the show, and the tongue-in-cheek irony is something viewers of any demographic will enjoy.

2. New Girl, Fox, Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST.
Zooey Deschanel has received tons of critical praise for this sitcom, and after you’ve seen an episode, it’s not hard to see why! Deschanel plays an elementary school teacher who moves in with three male roommates when she’s down on her luck, only to find they need her as much as she needs them. Her character Jess Day’s “adorkable” nature makes her impossible not to love, and her costars – particularly Max Greenfield – are hilarious.

3. Dating Rules from My Future Self, Hulu.

This online-only series just premiered a few weeks ago, but many collegiettes are already buzzing about Shiri Appelby’s star turn. You’ll also recognize costar Bryce Johnson, who plays Appleby’s ex-fiancee, as Darren Wilden from Pretty Little Liars. The episodes are each less than ten minutes long, so you won’t have to feel bad about taking a study break to watch them. Each episode is cute and lighthearted – you’ll want an app that can offer you dating advice, too!

4. Parks and Recreation, NBC, Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. EST.
If you’re getting tired of The Office, Parks and Rec is still in its prime. Amy Poehler is the ultimate female protagonist as the deputy head of parks and recreation (and city-councilwoman hopeful) in the small Indiana town of Pawnee. Her costars each bring a distinct flavor to the show with meme-inspiring characters like Ron Swanson [link:www.drunkronswanson.com] and Tom Haverford [link:www.tomhaverfoods.com]. It doesn’t hurt that costar Adam Scott, who you’ll recognize from the recent rom-com Friends with Kids, is super adorable, either!

5. Psych, USA, Wednesdays at 10 p.m. EST.
If you were heartbroken to hear that NBC’s Chuck was cancelled, you’ll find your new favorite show in Pysch. James Roday stars as Shawn Spencer, a hyperobservant person who pretends to be psychic in order to solve crimes with the Santa Barbara Police Department. While the crimes aren’t as gripping as you’d expect from CSI or Bones, the pop culture references and general humor of the show will definitely keep you entertained.

Bonus: Each episode has a pineapple hidden in it, whether it’s a decal on a cheese cutter or a full-fledged fruit. It’s a mini game of “I Spy” every time you turn on the TV!

6. Shameless, Showtime, 10 p.m. EST.

Like The Office, this show is a remake of a British comedy with the same name. The series follows William H. Macy as Frank Gallagher, a father of six children who consistently shirks his family responsibilities in favor of drinking (think Modern Family with Brit humor). If you’re an Emmy Rossum fan, you’re in luck – she costars as the eldest of the Gallagher offspring!

7. Hart of Dixie, The CW, Mondays at 9 p.m. EST.
If you watched the pilot of this series and were a bit disappointed, we’re encouraging you to give Hart of Dixie another shot. Rachel Bilson’s character, Zoe Hart, has become much more dimensional and even likable since the series premiere last fall – and aren’t you glad she’s back on the small screen? Bonus: costar Wilson Bethel is super hot!

8. Revenge, ABC, Wednesdays at 10 p.m. EST.
If you’re an English major, you’ll love this show – it was inspired by Alexander Dumas’s The Count of Monte Cristo. The first season premiered last September, so you won’t have too many episodes to catch up on if you decide to start watching. The show follows Emily VanCamp and Madeleine Stowe’s luxurious adventures in the Hamptons, including Emily’s father being falsely accused of terrorism and Victoria (Madeleine’s character) dealing with an extramarital affair. And while you’re at it, brush up on Dumas’s original novel, too!

9. 24 Hour Catwalk, Lifetime, Thursdays at 10:30 p.m. EST.

If you love Alexa Chung and Project Runway, 24 Hour Catwalk brings you the best of both worlds. In this Lifetime series, designers must create an entire collection within 24 hours. The show premiered this semester, so you still have time to catch up with the designers’ work and aesthetics.

10. 2 Broke Girls, CBS, Mondays at 8:30 p.m. EST.

Kat Dennings – who you likely remember from Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist – stars as the edgy Brooklyn girl Max Black, who befriends the suddenly bankrupt heiress Caroline Channing, played by Beth Behrs. The unlikely pair work at a spoon diner with aspirations of owning their own cupcake business, and the show tracks their hilarious progress along the way.
