Today is National Napping Day! What better way to celebrate than by learning about the benefits of napping—and then taking a nap, of course!
1. Relaxation
Could there be a more relaxing way to unwind in the middle of the afternoon? I think not, and I’m sure your cat would agree.
We all know that the stresses of everyday college life can take a toll on our overall health. Napping may help to reduce this stress.
2. Reduced fatigue
There’s no point in going through the day tired. When you’re tired, your productivity is reduced. Next time your faced with the most important existential question (to nap or not to nap?), I hope you nap. Once you’ve woken, it’s likely that the things on your to do list will be checked off more quickly that they would have been before your nap.
3. Increased alertness
Who among us hasn’t had an inordinate amount of typos while attempting to churn out a paper in the wee hours of the morning? It’s easy to miss mistakes when you’re tired. Yet another point in favor of the power nap.
4. Improved mood
It’s easy to be irritable when you think about all of the responsibilities on your plate. Instead of worrying, take a nap. You’ll probably wake up refreshed and with a much more positive outlook on life.
5. Quicker reaction time
This one is important for athletes. Napping can improve your reaction time, which in turn can improve athletic performance. Why not try a nap before the next big game?
6. Better memory
There’s nothing quite so dreaded in the life of a college student as exam period. Trying to cram all the facts you’ve learned in a semester is difficult. Make it easier by taking a nap between study sessions. Then, you’ll remember more of what you’re studying.
Before you tuck yourself in for a cozy afternoon nap, it’s important to remember a few key things for optimum napping. Keep your naps under 30 minutes, nap in the afternoon, and nap in a dark and quite spot. Happy National Napping Day!
