With summer coming to a close and school just around the corner, some of us may be prepared for another semester of studying, while the rest are just trying to make summer break stretch a little longer.
With that being said, I can’t blame you—so here are a few shows and flicks coming to Netflix in September.
1. Sarah Burgess Is a Loser – September 7
A Netflix original with Shannon Purser from Stranger Things and Noah Centineo from To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before? Heck YES. Sierra Burgess Is a Loser also tackles the issue of body image and I am all for it.
In this story of Cyrano de Bergerac-meets-high school, Sierra is an intelligent teen but not obsessed with typical beauty standards. Out of the blue, she receives texts from an unexpected hotties (Noah Centineo) who texts her thinking he’s messaging popular girl Veronica (Kristine Froseth). Sierra must then team up with Veronica to keep the catfishing game going and, in doing so, finds an unexpected romance and an unexpected friendship.
2. Black Panther – September 4
Finally, the blockbuster hit of 2018 is finally going to be available to watch in the comfort of your own home.
After the death of his father, T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) returns home to the African nation of Wakanda to take his rightful place as king. When a powerful enemy suddenly reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king, and as Black Panther, gets tested when he’s drawn into a conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people.
3. A Wrinkle in Time – September 25
With female director Ava DuVernay, a strong female protagonist, and three powerful female actresses gracing us with their presence on the screen, why wouldn’t you want to watch this adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s classic novel?
A Wrinkle in Time delves in the story of Meg Murry (Storm Reid) and her little brother, Charles Wallace, who have been without their scientist father, Mr. Murry (Chris Pine), for five years, ever since he discovered a new planet and used the concept known as a tesseract to travel there. Joined by Meg’s classmate Calvin O’Keefe and guided by the three mysterious travelers known as Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling) and Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey), the children brave a dangerous journey to a planet that possesses all of the evil in the universe.
4. American Horror Story: Cult (Season 7) – September 18
The fictional city of Brookfield Heights, Michigan is left divided by the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Local restaurant owner Ally Mayfair-Richards (Sarah Paulson) is distraught by Donald Trump’s victory and several of her phobias, including coulrophobia, hemophobia, and trypophobia, flare up as a result. Similarly devastated is fellow Brookfield Heights resident Winter Anderson (Billie Lourd), a college dropout. Contrarily, Kai Anderson (Evan Peters), Winter’s estranged and manipulative brother, rejoices at the election results and is enticed to pursue political power. Kai recruits a disillusioned Winter and frustrated newscast reporter Beverly Hope (Adina Porter).
Ally finds herself relentlessly terrorized by masked clowns. Those close to her, including her psychiatrist Dr. Rudy Vincent (Cheyenne Jackson), question whether the attacks are real or hallucinations. Ally’s paranoia, escalated by suspicious activities perpetrated by new neighbors Harrison (Billy Eichner) and Meadow Wilton (Leslie Grossman), hinders her relationships with her wife Ivy (Alison Pill) and their son (Cooper Dodson).
