There’s no denying that cheese and coffee are tasty on their own — but together? Cheese coffee is apparently the latest drink being served at Percolate, a Los Angeles-based artisan tea shop.
Better known as Bittersweet Tiramisu, the Percolate drink uses cold brew coffee from Unincorporated Coffee Roasters, sweetened cream cheese, heavy whipping cream, and cocoa powder.
It’s pretty similar to another one of their drinks: cheese tea, which is just iced tea topped with salty or sweet whipped cheese. This beverage, however, has deeper roots. According to Condé Nast Traveler, the drink has origins in Taiwan where people have been adding powdered cheese to their tea for years. Per Forbes, the popular Hey Tea chain has also been making cheese tea for awhile.
Percolate’s cheese coffee will likely introduce many people — especially in the U.S. — to the concept, but there’s a lot of different versions of the drink around the world. For example, Europeans are known for dunking chunks of cheese into regular coffee, and people in Vietnam drink “cà phê trúng,” which mixes coffee, cheese, and eggs.
Honestly, if butter coffee can become a thing, I’m sure cheese coffee can too.
